Amit Shah Declares Final Phase in Battle Against Left-Wing Extremism
Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah addressed the media in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, declaring that the fight against Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) in India is in its final phase. Emphasizing the determination of the Modi government, Shah asserted that left-wing extremism will be completely eradicated from the country by March 2026. His remarks came during a press conference focused on the ongoing efforts to combat LWE, which has plagued several regions of India for decades.
Shri Amit Shah credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the progress made in diminishing the influence of left-wing extremism across the country. He highlighted the governmentโs approach of fostering development to instill confidence among the population, steering them away from extremist ideologies. Shah referred to LWE as the biggest challenge to India’s democratic system and reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to overcoming this threat.
In his address, Shah appealed to the youth involved in LWE to abandon violence and join the national development efforts under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. The Union Home Minister also underscored the government’s strategy of prioritizing development to bridge the gaps created by years of left-wing extremism. He noted that significant strides had been made, particularly between 2019 and 2024, with many states nearly liberated from LWEโs grasp.
Shri Amit Shah highlighted the significant reduction in LWE-related violence, noting that 2022 marked a historic moment with deaths due to left-wing violence falling below 100 for the first time in four decades. The period between 2022 and 2024 witnessed the lowest number of LWE-related incidents, a testament to the effectiveness of the Modi governmentโs policies. Shah pointed out the dramatic decline in the number of deaths from a peak of 1005 in 2010 to just 138 in 2023. He credited the filling of the security vacuum and the disruption of LWE’s financing networks for this success, calling it a victory for both the countryโs security forces and democracy.
The Minister also praised the establishment of the โBastariya Battalionโ in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in 2017, a unit composed entirely of jawans from the Bastar region. He mentioned the special recruitment drive in 2022, which saw 400 tribal soldiers from Dantewada, Sukma, and Bijapur join the battalion, reflecting the government’s commitment to involving local communities in the fight against extremism.
Beyond the battlefield, Shah acknowledged the role of security forces in monitoring and facilitating development projects in areas affected by LWE. Over the last decade, significant progress has been made in Chhattisgarh in terms of connectivity, road construction, and financial integration, according to the Minister. He also announced that the Chhattisgarh government is set to introduce a new surrender policy aimed at encouraging youth to give up arms and reintegrate into society, to achieve 100% saturation of all government schemes by March 2025.
Shri Amit Shah concluded by highlighting a joint initiative between the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Chhattisgarh government to educate those who have remained illiterate due to the impact of LWE. The campaign aims to bring those individuals into the mainstream of development, further weakening the grip of extremism on affected communities.
As the government approaches its target of eradicating left-wing extremism, the success of these initiatives will be critical in ensuring long-term peace and development in the regions that have long suffered under its shadow.
