Bombay High Court Shields Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Ramayana’ from Piracy Ahead of November 5 Premiere
With Nitesh Tiwari’s highly anticipated film Ramayana: Part 1 set to hit theaters worldwide on November 5, the Bombay High Court has stepped in to provide comprehensive legal protection against piracy and unauthorized digital distribution. This order comes in response to a commercial suit filed by Godpower Media Private Limited, which aims to safeguard the film from illegal recording, hosting, and circulation of its copyrighted material.
Legal Protection Against Piracy
Godpower Media, which holds the domestic and territorial intellectual property rights for Ramayana: Part 1, sought the court’s intervention to protect various aspects of the project. These include the film’s script, character designs, footage, musical compositions, lyrics, and audio recordings. The company raised concerns about potential copyright violations, noting that unauthorized trailer footage had already appeared online, despite non-disclosure agreements being in place for exclusive preview screenings.
Justice Madhav Jamdar acknowledged the plaintiff’s “real and well-founded apprehension” regarding the risks of illegal recording, streaming, and piracy. The court also took into account the significant financial investment involved in the film, which has an estimated budget of Rs. 2,000 crore. The two-part saga is projected to involve a combined investment of Rs. 4,000 crore.
Dynamic Injunction Issued
In response to these concerns, the court issued a dynamic ad-interim injunction that restrains unidentified entities, referred to as “John Doe” defendants, along with pirate websites and digital intermediaries, from recording, hosting, or distributing the film without authorization. This dynamic nature of the injunction allows the filmmakers to notify internet service providers and digital platforms, including Google LLC, about infringing URLs and mirror websites that may arise.
The order facilitates the swift takedown of such links and the blocking of domains that enable unauthorized access to the film. Legal representatives for Google and other major platforms reportedly expressed “no objection” to the directive and indicated their willingness to comply upon receiving the necessary notifications. The matter is set to be heard again on December 16.
