Deadline Extended for National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Applications
The Union Ministry of Education has announced an extension for the submission deadline of applications under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the academic year 2026-27. Students now have until November 15, 2026, to submit their applications via the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). This extension is designed to assist eligible students in completing their applications and to ensure timely verification by the appropriate authorities.
Updated Timeline for Applications
The revised schedule for the scholarship application process includes the following deadlines:
- Submission of Application: November 15, 2026
- Institute Nodal Officer (L1) Verification: November 30, 2026
- District Nodal Officer (L2) Verification: December 15, 2026
Since its opening on June 1, 2026, the NSP has seen a significant response, with 90,483 fresh applications and 199,531 renewal applications submitted as of October 30, 2026. Students who have already applied must ensure their applications are verified by the concerned Institute Nodal Officer by November 30 and by the District Nodal Officer by December 15, 2026.
Supporting Economically Disadvantaged Students
The NMMSS aims to provide support to academically talented students from economically weaker sections, encouraging them to pursue their education from Class IX to Class XII. Annually, the scheme offers one lakh fresh scholarships to eligible Class IX students who successfully pass the selection examination administered by their respective State or Union Territory governments.
Scholarship recipients can receive ₹12,000 annually, which is directly deposited into their bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. To qualify, students must achieve a minimum of 55% marks in Class VII, with a 5% relaxation for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students. Additionally, the applicant’s parental income must not exceed ₹3.50 lakh per annum.
This initiative not only fosters educational advancement among students from less privileged backgrounds but also aims to reduce dropout rates in higher classes, thereby promoting a more educated workforce for the future.
