Wall Street Firms Commit to Monthly Payments for Faster Access to Trump’s Posts: An Overview
US President Donald Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, has secured agreements with Bloomberg and two high-frequency trading firms for its paid service, Truth API. This service, which costs up to $100,000 per month, provides subscribers with faster access to Trump’s posts, potentially giving them an edge in financial markets. The arrangement has raised concerns regarding the implications of selling quicker access to a sitting president’s statements.
How Truth API Works
Launched in July, Truth API is designed to deliver Trump’s posts more rapidly than traditional methods of checking the platform. Trump Media and Technology Group claims the service offers a timing advantage of 50 milliseconds, a critical difference for firms that rely on automated trading systems. These systems can react to market-moving news in fractions of a second, making the speed of information crucial.
The impact of Trump’s posts on financial markets was evident in April when oil futures dropped following his announcement of a ceasefire in the Iran war via Truth Social. The API functions as a digital bridge, allowing subscribers to integrate Trump’s posts into their trading systems.
Who is Paying for the Service?
Bloomberg, Susquehanna International Group, and Jump Trading are among the organizations that have signed up for Truth API. Trump Media reported in August that it had secured over ten customer agreements, although this figure has not been independently verified. The company has not disclosed the identities of its customers but indicated that they primarily consist of Wall Street trading firms paying between $60,000 and $100,000 monthly.
Reuters, a competitor to Bloomberg, stated it would evaluate the service but has no current plans to subscribe. Trump Media defended the product, asserting that it meets industry standards and that customer confidentiality is a priority.
Why the Paid Feed Has Drawn Criticism
The paid service has faced scrutiny for potentially providing financial firms with an unfair advantage by granting them faster access to presidential statements. This arrangement is unprecedented, as it marks the first time a business associated with a sitting president has sold access to his communications.
In July, Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren and Adam Schiff requested an investigation from the US Securities and Exchange Commission, labeling the service a “shocking abuse” of presidential power. A spokesperson for Trump Media countered that the criticisms stem from a misunderstanding of the distinction between public and nonpublic information. Additionally, a lawsuit filed by Intercept Media and the Freedom of the Press Foundation seeks to prevent the White House from exclusively posting official announcements on Truth Social, claiming the service is “profoundly corrupt.”
Trump Media’s Financial Portfolio
The commercial agreements have also spotlighted the ownership structure of Trump Media. The president’s family trust holds a 41% stake in the company, with Trump as the sole beneficiary. The Truth API deals come amid a significant decline in Trump Media’s stock value, which has dropped over 50% this year. The company’s market value has fluctuated since its public debut in March 2024, falling from approximately $8 billion to about $1.8 billion, resulting in a loss of around $1.76 billion, including non-cash charges.
