Nifty 50 on Track for Its Worst Annual Performance in a Decade: Is Now the Right Time to Invest in Stocks?
NEW DELHI: The Nifty50 index has experienced a significant downturn in 2026, plummeting 13% this year. This decline raises questions for investors considering whether to buy stocks at lower prices. Experts caution that factors such as slowing economic growth, high crude oil prices, and stretched valuations may continue to limit market returns.
Thyagesh Baba, a non-executive director at Spark Capital Advisors, indicated that the Nifty50 is on track for its worst annual performance in over a decade, following a substantial rise in the previous ten years. Investors are left to ponder whether companies can maintain earnings growth and if improved market conditions will lead to better returns. Baba noted that the index’s outlook for the coming year will depend on sustained earnings growth, a return of foreign investors after record outflows, easing crude prices, and a revival in private investment.
Is it time to buy?
Despite the market’s weak performance, the current situation may not be a compelling reason to invest. Baba emphasized that slowing growth, elevated oil prices, and high valuations could restrict potential returns even after the recent correction. He pointed out that while Nifty 50 companies are projected to report a 20% profit growth in the September quarter—the fastest in three years—investors accustomed to annual growth rates of 20%-25% should adjust their expectations. A growth rate of 16% would still be strong in an economy with nominal growth of 10%-12%.
This shift in focus underscores the importance of companies’ ability to deliver sustainable profits rather than relying on expectations of widespread increases in stock valuations.
What could support the market?
The return of foreign investors is seen as a crucial element for the market’s future, especially following record outflows. Baba also highlighted the significance of moderating crude oil prices and a resurgence in private investment as key factors for the Nifty’s performance next year. Improvements in India’s banking system and corporate balance sheets further contribute to a more favorable outlook. Years of regulatory tightening have strengthened the banking sector, while companies have become more disciplined in managing capital and reducing leverage.
Baba noted that the previous model of borrowing at high interest rates to fund businesses with lower returns has largely diminished. However, he reiterated that the potential for future market returns is closely tied to companies’ earnings performance and the overall investment climate. The Nifty50’s 13% decline does not, by itself, indicate a readiness for a sustained recovery. Investors should monitor companies’ earnings sustainability, foreign investor activity, crude oil price trends, and private investment growth as these factors will influence market performance in the coming year.
