Farmers Empowered with Sustainable Practices in Bihar
The ICAR–Mahatma Gandhi Integrated Farming Research Institute (ICAR-MGIFRI) held an impactful awareness and interaction program for farmers on October 27, 2026, at Kothia Hariram village in the Mehsi Block of East Champaran, Bihar. This program, part of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan 2026 initiative, aimed to educate participants on sustainable agricultural practices, focusing on balanced fertilization, soil health management, nutrient recycling, crop diversification, and the effective management of mango and litchi orchards.
Dr. Amol K. Jadhav, a scientist at ICAR-MGIFRI, spearheaded the session attended by 29 local farmers. He emphasized that effective soil-test-based nutrient management is critical for both orchard productivity and long-term soil fertility. Dr. Jadhav warned against the hazards of indiscriminate fertilizer use, which can inflate cultivation costs and lead to nutrient imbalances. Instead, he advocated for applying fertilizers based on specific soil-test results, crop requirements, and orchard conditions to optimize resource use and support sustainability.
Enhancing Soil Health Through Organic Resources
During the program, attendees were educated about nutrient recycling and the efficient use of organic resources readily available on their farms. Dr. Jadhav highlighted how incorporating materials such as crop residues, fallen leaves, farmyard manure, and compost can significantly enhance soil organic matter. Improved soil structure and nutrient availability not only boost orchard health but also decrease reliance on external inputs, making farming more sustainable.
Promoting Crop Diversification
The potential of intercropping and crop diversification was another key topic discussed, showcasing how farmers can maximize land-use efficiency. Participants were encouraged to explore suitable intercrops, particularly legumes and location-specific varieties that align with the age of the orchards, canopy coverage, and seasonal moisture availability. These practices not only help in efficient resource usage but also pave the way for supplementary income, diversifying the economic stability of their farms.
Practical Experiences from Local Farmers
Farmers shared their insights and challenges related to fertilizer applications, soil health, organic resource management, and intercrop strategies during the interaction. The open discussions facilitated the sharing of practical, economically viable solutions that are also environmentally friendly, all aimed at enhancing productivity and profitability in fruit farming.
Khet Bachao Abhiyan 2026 serves as a vital initiative by ICAR-MGIFRI to champion balanced fertilization and sustainable agricultural practices. Through hands-on engagement, the program aspires to empower farmers in East Champaran, reinforcing self-reliance and fostering climate-resilient agricultural livelihoods in the region, particularly for mango and litchi growers.
