Global Response to PHP Security Vulnerabilities as CERT-In Issues Warning

BENGALURU: The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a critical-severity warning regarding two vulnerabilities in PHP, a widely used open-source scripting language. These flaws could enable unauthenticated attackers to execute malicious code remotely and potentially compromise affected systems. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella described the scale of the incident as unusual, noting that he had not witnessed anything like it in a long time.

CERT-In’s advisory, released on Wednesday, confirmed large-scale exploitation of these vulnerabilities and urged organizations and individuals using affected PHP versions to apply security updates immediately. The urgency of the situation has prompted precautionary shutdowns of some online services and a global patching effort.

CERT-In Flags Vulnerabilities

Google Cloud executives Chris Betz and Raluca Ada Popa reported that the vulnerabilities were disclosed following research that utilized multiple AI models for identification and remediation. While Google Cloud stated that its infrastructure is not vulnerable, it cautioned that customers running PHP applications on the platform could be at risk. The company has advised customers to update their applications to patched PHP versions and redeploy them. Additionally, Google is rolling out updated serverless base images for supported PHP runtimes, with automatic updates available for certain services.

The response to these vulnerabilities has been widespread. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince noted that thousands of attempts to exploit the vulnerabilities occurred within the 10 hours prior to their public announcement. In response, companies and government agencies in various countries have temporarily restricted access to some online services while they secure vulnerable systems. Cloudflare successfully deployed mitigations for all its customers after the vulnerabilities were leaked before their official disclosure.
