NHAI Enhances Air Quality with New Emission Control Devices
In a significant move to bolster environmental protection along the National Highway corridor in the National Capital Region (NCR), the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to install Retrofit Emission Control Devices (RECDs) on 25 Diesel Generator (DG) sets. These generators are crucial for operations along the 8.7 km stretch of Package-IV of the Dwarka Expressway, connecting Basai to the Kherki Dhaula/Delhi-Gurugram Expressway intersection.
Addressing Air Quality Concerns
This initiative aligns with the directives from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), which regulates Diesel Generator sets in the NCR to combat air pollution, especially during the winter months. The Dwarka Expressway Package IV is located in an area that faces severe pollution issues when temperatures drop. With the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), the CAQM has mandated new regulations and emission control measures for DG sets in operation.
Implementation of Retrofits
The installation of RECDs will specifically target DG sets used for lighting the expressway and other associated operations, enhancing emission control during their use. The process will include installation, rigorous testing, and commissioning of these devices, along with ongoing maintenance support to ensure efficient operation.
Commitment to Environmental Standards
This initiative forms part of NHAI’s larger commitment to integrate environmental protection into the construction and operation of National Highway projects, particularly in the NCR. By ensuring that all DG sets necessary for highway-related tasks are equipped with proper emission control technologies, NHAI is working within the regulatory framework aimed at improving air quality.
Transparent Monitoring Practices
To maintain accountability, NHAI has announced that GPS-tagged photographs documenting the installation of the RECDs at each DG set location will be maintained. This verification measure will allow for transparency and compliance with environmental standards.
Long-Term Environmental Goals
NHAI’s environmental initiative is in line with broader goals to ensure that the expansion and operational management of National Highway infrastructure adhere to strict air quality norms. As air pollution remains a pressing issue in urban areas, such proactive steps signify NHAI’s dedication to sustainable infrastructure development.
