Government Launches E-Waste Management Campaign for Cleaner Workplaces
The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has kicked off the Special Campaign for Disposal of Pending Matters 6 (SCDPM 6), focusing particularly on the effective management of e-waste. This initiative aims to enhance workplace cleanliness, reduce backlog, and promote better organization within offices and industrial units managed by the MHI and its Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) and Autonomous Bodies (ABs).
The preparatory phase of the campaign is underway from September 15 to September 30, 2026. During this period, the MHI and its affiliates are meticulously reviewing both physical and electronic files, identifying obsolete items, scrap, and e-waste, all while taking necessary steps to dispose of them properly. This effort aims not only to declutter office spaces but also to improve record management and foster organized workplaces.
Focusing on E-Waste Management
This year’s campaign highlights the importance of effective e-waste management, urging all CPSEs and ABs under the MHI to identify e-waste generated in their operations. These entities are following the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, ensuring that items are segregated and disposed of responsibly.
Recent advancements in e-waste management practices can be seen in actions taken at BHEL, where specific e-waste items have been earmarked for collection and responsible disposal. This proactive approach not only safeguards the environment but also instills responsible waste management habits within public sector establishments.
In addition to managing e-waste, various cleanliness drives are scheduled across office campuses and industrial units. These initiatives are designed to cultivate a safe and clutter-free work environment, nurturing a culture of accountability and responsible waste management amongst the workforce.
Campaign Goals and Monitoring
By September 24, 2026, several key objectives have been set for the preparatory phase. These include:
- 272 locations identified for intensive cleanliness initiatives.
- Over 1.8 million square feet of space targeted for decluttering.
- 4,003 physical files reviewed for potential disposal.
- Over 51,000 electronic files found for closure to enhance digital management.
- 439 e-waste items noted for collection and segregation according to regulations.
The MHI is conducting regular meetings with senior officials and nodal officers from the CPSEs and ABs to track progress and ensure the campaign’s effectiveness. Topics of discussion include the disposal of pending matters, cleanliness efforts, and appropriate management of e-waste.
During the preparatory phase, all entities are maintaining detailed records of their activities related to file reviews, cleanliness drives, and e-waste management. This data will be closely monitored as the Ministry gears up for the implementation phase, scheduled to take place from October 2 to October 31, 2026.
