NHRC’s Online Internship Program Empowers Future Human Rights Advocates
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India celebrated the conclusion of its two-week Online Short-Term Internship Programme (OSTI) today, with 95 students from various universities successfully completing the initiative. The program, which began on September 14, 2026, received an overwhelming response, attracting over 1,000 applicants from 19 states and union territories across the nation.

During the valedictory session, NHRC Member, Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, praised the interns for their dedication and hard work over the course of the program. He highlighted that the training was not just an educational experience, but a transformative journey. He urged the participants to uphold the principles they learned, encapsulated in the mantra “Preach, Practice and Perform.” Justice Sarangi stressed the need for continuous learning in the field of human rights and encouraged the interns to share their knowledge within their communities.
A Call to Action
Justice Sarangi also reminded the interns of their potential impact on society, particularly through acts of compassion toward vulnerable groups, including the elderly and individuals with disabilities. He expressed confidence that young leaders like them could significantly contribute to the nation’s progress and social development.
Embarking on a New Responsibility
Smt. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, another NHRC member, echoed similar sentiments during her address. She emphasized that the end of the internship signifies the start of a greater responsibility to advocate for human rights and uphold the values enshrined in the Constitution. According to her, human rights ought to be part of daily life, encompassing dignity, justice, compassion, and accountability.
Fostering a Spirit of Collaboration
NHRC Secretary General, Shri Piyush Goyal, congratulated the interns and highlighted the significance of integrating academic lessons with real-life applications, especially regarding respect for human dignity. He pointed out that effective teamwork and communication were nurtured throughout the program, shaping the interns into potential champions of human rights. Goyal encouraged the newly qualified advocates to raise awareness about human rights issues in their communities.
Celebrating Achievements
Nearing the session’s end, NHRC Joint Secretary, Shri Samir Kumar, provided an overview of the internship program, noting the valuable interactions the interns had with NHRC members, senior officials, and experts from various fields. He expressed hope that the experience deepened their understanding of human rights and announced winners of various competitions, including book reviews and group presentations. Smt.
