Vande Bharat Trains and Infrastructure Projects Revolutionizing Travel Times Across India
India’s infrastructure expansion is significantly reducing travel times across the country. Recent government data highlights how investments in bridges, tunnels, expressways, and railways are transforming connectivity. The New Delhi-Varanasi rail service, for instance, is now 40-50% faster than previous options.
Bridges: Crossing barriers, cutting hours
Bridges have played a crucial role in improving travel efficiency. The Bhupen Hazarika Setu, also known as the Dhola-Sadiya Bridge, has cut travel time between Rupai in Assam and Meka/Roing in Arunachal Pradesh from six hours to just one hour. Similarly, the Bogibeel Bridge has reduced the journey between Dhemaji and Dibrugarh from nearly a full day to just one to two hours.
Other notable improvements include the Atal Setu, which has decreased the Mumbai-Navi Mumbai travel time from about two hours to around 20 minutes. The Kosi Rail Mahasetu has transformed the Nirmali-Saraigarh rail journey, reducing it from eight hours to just 30 minutes and shortening the distance from approximately 300 km to 22 km.
Tunnels: Taking the shorter route through mountains
Tunnels are also reshaping travel in mountainous regions. The 9.02-km Atal Tunnel bypasses Rohtang Pass, cutting 46 km from the Manali-Sarchu route and saving four to five hours. The Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel has reduced the Jammu-Srinagar travel distance by about 30 km, saving nearly two hours.
Additionally, the Banihal-Qazigund twin-tube tunnel saves around one and a half hours, while the Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh has reduced travel time on the Tezpur-Tawang route by more than an hour, providing all-weather connectivity.
Expressways: Compressing long road journeys
Access-controlled highways are delivering significant reductions in travel times on major routes. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway has cut the journey from around two and a half hours to just 50 minutes. The Bengaluru-Mysuru route has seen a decrease from nearly three hours to about 75 minutes, while the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor has reduced travel time from over six hours to approximately two and a half hours.
The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway aims to halve the travel time from Delhi to Amritsar from eight hours to four hours and from Delhi to Katra from 14 hours to six hours. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is under development to bring the journey down from roughly 33 hours to about 12 hours.
Railways: Making conventional trains faster
Speed improvements are also evident in the railway sector. The 2026 railway timetable has sped up 549 trains across the network. Among these, 20 trains gained at least 60 minutes, while 48 gained between 31 and 59 minutes. Additionally, 105 trains saw a speed increase of 16 to 30 minutes, and 376 trains became five to 15 minutes faster.
The Vande Bharat services have further enhanced this effort. The New Delhi-Varanasi service is now 40-50% faster than earlier services. Other notable improvements include the Katra-Srinagar service, which saves two to three hours, and the Banaras-Khajuraho train, which saves around two hours and 40 minutes.
High-speed rail: The next connectivity leap
High-speed rail is the next frontier in India’s connectivity efforts. The 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is designed for an operational speed of 320 kmph, expected to reduce travel time to around one hour and 58 minutes. This corridor will feature 12 stations and include India’s first undersea rail tunnel, approximately 7 km beneath Thane Creek.
The government has also announced plans for seven high-speed rail corridors covering nearly 4,000 km, with an estimated investment of Rs 16 lakh crore. Proposed routes include Delhi-Varanasi, Varanasi-Patna-Siliguri, Chennai-Bengaluru, Bengaluru-Hyderabad, Chennai-Hyderabad, Mumbai-Pune, and Pune-Hyderabad.
