NSE’s Lackluster Market Debut: Ranks as Ninth Most Valued Listed Company in India at Rs 4.63 Lakh Crore

Shares of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) opened at Rs 1,800 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on Thursday, reflecting a modest premium of less than 1% over its IPO price of Rs 1,785. The IPO valued the exchange at Rs 4.42 lakh crore, significantly higher than its rival BSE, which has a market capitalization of Rs 1.33 lakh crore.

NSE Market Capitalization

Following its debut, NSE shares experienced a rally of approximately 3%, pushing the market capitalization to Rs 4.63 lakh crore. This positions NSE as the ninth-largest listed company in India, surpassing major players like Hindustan Unilever (HUL) and Sun Pharmaceuticals. However, it still trails behind Reliance Industries, which boasts a market cap of Rs 16.77 lakh crore, and HDFC Bank at Rs 11.25 lakh crore. Analysts noted that the initial trading dynamics for NSE shares could be influenced by the balance of demand and supply, particularly due to restrictions on exits for many large shareholders.

Analysts’ View

Macquarie has initiated coverage of NSE with an Outperform rating and set a target price of Rs 1,965, indicating a potential upside of 10% from the upper end of the IPO price band. The brokerage emphasized NSE’s leadership in market share and its robust position in the financial markets, citing its extensive range of services and strong liquidity. Macquarie anticipates a compound annual growth rate of 12% in NSE’s revenue from FY26 to FY30, driven by non-transaction revenues and new product offerings.

Emkay has also begun coverage with a Buy recommendation, targeting a price of Rs 2,050, which suggests a 15% upside. Their optimistic outlook is based on the long-term growth potential of India’s capital markets, NSE’s sustained leadership, and the profitability of market infrastructure institutions. The IPO, which raised Rs 22,562 crore entirely through an offer for sale, saw strong investor demand, with overall subscriptions reaching 5.71 times the shares on offer.
