Nitin Gadkari Expresses Disappointment Over Mumbai-Goa Highway Delays
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced plans to intensify actions against contractors and officials responsible for delays and poor-quality work on infrastructure projects. He aims to set a record for blacklisting contractors and suspending officials involved in such failures. Gadkari expressed his frustration over the prolonged delays in the widening of the Mumbai-Goa Highway and plans to personally inspect the project in October.
Record Blacklisting Initiative
During a recent event, Gadkari stated his intention to blacklist as many contractors as possible and suspend officials accountable for infrastructure delays. He had previously refrained from attending the inauguration of the Mumbai-Goa highway due to the project’s delays. “I would land at the Mumbai airport in October and travel by road to Goa to personally inspect the highway,” he said. He emphasized that the government would continue to take stringent actions against those responsible for substandard execution.
Gadkari also urged the Goa government to enhance roadside amenities along the highway, incorporating local architecture, cuisine, and handicrafts. He suggested that these facilities should provide visitors with an authentic Goan experience, including opportunities to enjoy local food and purchase handicraft products. Additionally, he proposed the inclusion of biofuel and electric vehicle facilities alongside traditional fuel pumps.
Delays in Highway Widening
The widening of the Mumbai-Goa highway, which traverses Maharashtra’s coastal Konkan region, has faced multiple delays. Gadkari criticized the reliance on contractors for landscaping, advocating for a scientific approach to tree planting. He called for a proper study to identify suitable tree species that would enhance the environment along the highway.
Gadkari appealed to local leaders to support initiatives aimed at transforming the highway into a “green highway” and suggested developing it similarly to an “oxygen park.” He highlighted the importance of quality infrastructure in attracting investment and reducing poverty. Furthermore, he called for efforts to eliminate pollution and a comprehensive review of traffic conditions in Goa, proposing measures to alleviate congestion.
