India’s Dedicated Freight Corridor Network Fully Operational
India’s dedicated freight corridors network is set to enhance logistics efficiency as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three new sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) on Tuesday. These sections, covering a total of 326 route kilometers, were developed at a cost exceeding Rs 20,700 crore. The newly inaugurated stretches include New Sanand (N)-New Makarpura, New Umbergaon-New Saphale, and New Saphale-New JNPT.
Expansion of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Network
The Ministry of Railways has been instrumental in constructing two Dedicated Freight Corridors. The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) spans 1,337 km from Ludhiana to Sonnagar, while the WDFC connects Dadri to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) over 1,506 km. The direct link to JNPT is anticipated to accelerate the movement of EXIM cargo, enhance connectivity between industrial hubs and ports, reduce logistics costs, and alleviate congestion on Mumbai’s railway network.
With the commissioning of these sections, the entire Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network is now operational. This dedicated freight infrastructure is expected to bolster India’s logistics framework by improving multimodal connectivity, reducing transit times, and facilitating smoother cargo movement across regions. PM Modi also flagged off freight train services from New Sanand (North), New Makarpura, New Umbergaon, and New JNPT in Mumbai.
Performance and Future Initiatives
Prior to the recent commissioning, the two corridors managed an average of approximately 443 trains daily. Their operational performance has shown consistent improvement, with rising freight volumes, increased average speeds, quicker turnaround times, and enhanced reliability, as reported by the Ministry of Railways.
The DFC network has also created additional capacity on the conventional railway network by transferring freight traffic to the EDFC and WDFC. This shift has enabled the Railways to operate more goods and coaching services across its network. The Dedicated Freight Corridor project has positively impacted transportation and logistics, facilitating greater movement of Double Stack Container (DSC) trains and higher axle load trains.
The Union Budget for 2026 announced plans for a new Dedicated Freight Corridor linking Dankuni in the east with Surat in the west. Work on updating the Detailed Project Report for this proposed corridor has already commenced. The Ministry of Railways noted that these initiatives have contributed to increased freight loading and revenue for the national transporter in recent years.
