Gebremariam Pledges to Revitalize Air India

NEW DELHI: Tata Sons and Air India chairman N Chandrasekaran outlined key objectives for the airline during a town hall meeting on Monday. He emphasized the importance of safety, financial stability, and customer trust as the airline transitions to new leadership. Tewolde Gebremariam, the incoming MD and CEO, echoed these sentiments, vowing to “make Air India great again” as the airline seeks to recover from recent challenges.

Chandrasekaran acknowledged the difficulties faced by Air India over the past 18 months, citing geopolitical disruptions, airspace closures, and fuel volatility. He described the return of Air India to the Tata Group as a significant milestone in his career. “AI belongs to a billion people,” he stated, highlighting the public’s strong opinions and support for the airline. He stressed that the next phase for Air India will prioritize safety, operational execution, and cost discipline, urging employees to foster a culture of cost consciousness to ensure financial sustainability.

Gebremariam, who previously led Ethiopian Airlines, will assume his role as MD and CEO pending security clearance. He emphasized the necessity of a safety-first culture, stating that safety must be a daily commitment. “If something is not right, stop,” he instructed, encouraging employees to voice concerns. He also outlined the importance of operational excellence, which includes timely departures and arrivals, efficient baggage handling, and maintaining clean aircraft. Gebremariam called for employee support in the turnaround effort, asserting that meaningful change requires collective commitment.

Outgoing CEO Campbell Wilson acknowledged the progress made in the last four years, commending the dedication of Air India’s staff. He noted that while transformation efforts are ongoing, the airline’s best days are still ahead.
