India Revamps Allied Healthcare Education with New Degree Programs
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is enhancing education and training standards for Allied and Healthcare Professions, aiming to cultivate a skilled workforce prepared for the future. In a pivotal move, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced the introduction of 33 new degrees and 21 updated degrees for undergraduate and postgraduate programs governed by the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP).
This initiative was formalized through the 5th Amendment to the Specification of Degrees under Section 22(3) of the UGC Act, 1956, with the notification published on August 31, 2026. The changes strive to establish uniformity in Allied and Healthcare education across India, setting clearer academic and professional pathways in these essential fields.
Advancements in Allied and Healthcare Degrees
Dr. Yagna Unmesh Shukla, Chairperson of NCAHP, praised the initiative, stating, “This UGC notification will bring consistency across Allied and Healthcare courses, including their duration, degree titles, and entry qualifications under the ‘One Nation, One Curriculum’ principle. This will significantly guide students aspiring to build careers in these professions recognized under the NCAHP Act, 2021.”
The newly decreed degrees encompass various domains, including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, and Medical Laboratory Sciences, among others. The notification not only clarifies the degree titles, abbreviations, and duration but also revises certain course lengths.
Specializations to Broaden Opportunities
Students will now benefit from specialization-specific degrees, including nine for Master of Occupational Therapy and eight for Master of Physiotherapy, enhancing academic offerings at universities in response to the healthcare sector’s evolving demands. This reform is intended to create equal institutional standards and align degree titles with international qualifications, potentially attracting more students to these vital career paths.
Commitment to Quality Education
The changes align with the NCAHP’s legislative mandate to regulate education and maintain professional standards in Allied and Healthcare Professions. Already, NCAHP has introduced 18 competency-based curricula for 28 professions, focusing on standardizing educational content across the country. These curricula emphasize practical training through adequate internships, ensuring students acquire essential clinical skills.
To facilitate the smooth implementation of these reforms, NCAHP has directed states, union territories, and other stakeholders to adopt the new curricula ahead of the 2026-27 academic year. The Commission is also finalizing additional competency-based curricula for subsequent years.
