India and Argentina Strengthen Economic Ties at Joint Trade Committee Meeting

The Fourth Meeting of the India–Argentina Joint Trade Committee (JTC) took place on August 24, 2026, at the Palacio San Martín in Buenos Aires. The meeting, led by Indian Commerce Secretary Shri Rajesh Agrawal and Argentine Ambassador Fernando Brun, aimed to review the progress made since Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visit to Argentina in 2025. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing their strategic and economic partnership.

In 2025, bilateral trade between India and Argentina exceeded USD 6.5 billion, marking an impressive annual growth rate of over 17 percent. This growth has positioned India as Argentina’s fifth-largest trading partner, signifying vast potential to expand and diversify trade relations. Efforts by Argentina to streamline foreign trade and lower non-tariff barriers should further facilitate Indian companies’ participation in its market. Both sides emphasized the need for a balanced framework that ensures fair opportunities for businesses in both nations.

Investment Opportunities and Agricultural Progress

Discussions highlighted potential investment opportunities in sectors such as mining, energy, and infrastructure. The Indian firm KABIL continues to make strides in Argentina’s lithium sector, having successfully completed Phase II drilling in Catamarca, marking the first lithium mining project by an Indian company in the country. Future engagement in the provinces of Salta and Jujuy is also on the horizon to further solidify this strategic partnership.

Significant advancements were noted regarding market access for Indian agricultural products in Argentina. Ongoing technical discussions on sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures are paving the way for the entry of Indian onions, milk products, grapes, and other produce. These developments are expected to enhance opportunities for Indian farmers and exporters, bolstering agricultural trade and contributing to India’s goal of achieving Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Pharmaceutical Collaborations and Emerging Sectors

Encouraging progress was also made in facilitating entry for Indian pharmaceutical products into the Argentine market. Argentina plans to upgrade India’s status under its pharmaceutical regulatory framework, which will help reduce barriers for Indian pharmaceutical companies and enhance healthcare access for Argentine residents. The meeting reaffirmed commitments to strengthen cooperation in traditional medicine through joint initiatives in Ayurveda and Yoga.

Emerging areas of cooperation were identified, including aviation, space technology, telecommunications, and digital services, particularly in 5G and artificial intelligence.

Business Forum and Future Prospects

Following the JTC meeting, the India–Argentina Business Forum was held on August 25, bringing together government officials and business leaders from both nations. Commerce Secretary Shri Rajesh Agrawal led the largest Indian business delegation to Argentina, comprising over 25 industry leaders from notable companies like UPL and Aditya Birla Group. The forum provided a platform for direct engagement, fostering discussions aimed at turning government collaboration into tangible commercial opportunities.

As both countries continue to strengthen their economic partnership, they are poised to enhance trade, increase investment, and create new avenues for value creation. With collaboration extending across traditional and emerging sectors, the future looks promising for both India and Argentina.
