India’s Ayurveda Enters Global Arena With New Strategic Roadmap

On July 2, 2026, NITI Aayog unveiled an ambitious report titled “Strategic Roadmap for Making Ayurveda Global”, outlining a phased approach to enhance Ayurveda’s international presence. The report was introduced by Dr. Ashok Kumar Lahiri, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, during a notable event attended by key figures including Prof. (Dr.) M. Srinivas, NITI Aayog Member, and Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, along with senior officials and stakeholders from various sectors.

In his address, Dr. Lahiri emphasized the potential of Ayurveda to position India as a frontrunner in traditional medicine on a global scale. He pointed out the vast economic benefits, including job creation and bolstered exports, while also nurturing India’s cultural identity and soft power. A coordinated effort across governmental bodies is essential for the successful implementation of this vision, he noted.

Prof. M. Srinivas added that the globalization of Ayurveda extends beyond mere economic growth; it is fundamentally about enhancing health outcomes worldwide. By providing diverse, evidence-based health options, Ayurveda can contribute to the global motto of “सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः,” which means “May all be happy.”

Highlighting the initiatives of the Ministry of Ayush, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha shared insights about the significant strides made over the past decade in promoting Ayurveda globally. He expressed confidence that the strategies outlined in the report would amplify these efforts and help establish Ayurveda as a universally recognized healthcare system.

Additionally, Mr. Acquino Vimal from the Ministry of External Affairs pointed out the advancements made through India’s international partners, which play a crucial role in globalizing Ayurveda.

The collaborative study conducted by NITI Aayog and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) involved extensive consultations and data analysis. It identified various opportunities and challenges in bringing Ayurveda to a global audience.

The report is structured around a three-pillar framework:

  • Availability: This includes efforts to enhance global practices, manufacturing, research and development, and standardized education.
  • Acceptability: This focuses on regulatory compliance, international collaborations, and the cultural adaptability of Ayurveda.
  • Propagation: This encompasses branding strategies, global visibility, and participation in international medical forums.

The phased strategy outlined in the report aims to extend upto 2047, aligning with the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047. It is poised to be an invaluable resource for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders, guiding evidence-based decisions that strengthen India’s position in traditional medicine. Furthermore, it reflects India’s commitment to the principle of “One Earth, One Health”, enhancing global well-being through its rich medicinal heritage.
