Vietnamese Police and Animal Welfare Group Rescue Hundreds of Stolen Cats Intended for Food
More than 400 cats have been rescued in Vietnam following the dismantling of an alleged feline theft ring, according to an animal welfare organization. Authorities arrested nine individuals linked to the operation, which involved the theft and collection of cats for slaughter. The police recovered both live and deceased animals during raids in Ho Chi Minh City and Tay Ninh Province, highlighting the ongoing issue of pet theft in the region.
Details of the Rescue Operation
In a significant operation last week, police in Vietnam recovered over 400 live cats and around 80 dead animals preserved on ice. The raids took place in Tay Ninh Province and Ho Chi Minh City, where authorities acted on reports of a criminal group specializing in cat theft. The investigation began on June 11, following a series of pet thefts reported in Ho Chi Minh City. Local media indicated that the suspects had been trapping and collecting cats across southern Vietnam for the past three years.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
Nine individuals have been arrested in connection with the theft ring. Police reported that the suspects transported stolen cats to various holding facilities before selling them to traders, with transactions occurring every two to three days. The investigation remains active, and authorities are encouraging residents who suspect their pets have been stolen to come forward. This initiative aims to help identify the recovered animals and reunite them with their owners.
Impact on Animal Welfare
Humane World for Animals, the organization involved in the rescue, reported that around 40 of the recovered cats have been reunited with their owners. The group commended local authorities for their decisive action, which saved many animals from a grim fate. However, they also noted that some cats had died as a result of their ordeal. The organization is currently providing food and supplies for the animals still held by police as evidence in the ongoing case.
Context of Pet Theft in Vietnam
The consumption of dog and cat meat is legal in Vietnam, but vendors must have permits that verify the animals’ origins. An estimated five million dogs and one million cats are captured, stolen, trafficked, and slaughtered for meat in the country each year. Humane World for Animals highlighted that pets are often stolen from homes using various methods, including poisoned bait and snares. Despite the prevalence of this practice, attitudes toward the consumption of dog and cat meat are shifting, particularly among younger generations and pet owners, with many supporting bans on the trade. A recent survey indicated a growing public opposition to the practice, signaling a potential change in societal norms.
