When a car tyre hits a pothole at speed, the force transfers directly to the alloy wheel beneath it. Alloy wheels, made from a mix of aluminium and other metals, are lighter and stronger than steel wheels, but they are not immune to impact. The wheel can deform slightly on one edge, creating what is known as a buckle or a bent rim. In more severe cases, a crack can form in the wheel’s structure.

There is also a growing awareness issue. Surveys by motoring organisations suggest that a large number of drivers do not check their alloy wheels for damage after hitting a pothole. Many assume that because the car “feels fine,” nothing is wrong. But wheel damage often works in slow and subtle ways, degrading performance gradually rather than causing an immediate, obvious fault.
The simplest advice from vehicle safety professionals remains consistent: after any significant pothole strike, carry out a visual check of all four wheels. Look for any flat spots, chips along the inner rim edge, or signs that the wheel no longer sits perfectly flush against the tyre. If anything looks off, get it looked at before it becomes a bigger and more expensive problem.
