Smriti Irani Teams Up with British Council to Empower 100,000 Women Entrepreneurs in India

A significant partnership aimed at empowering women entrepreneurs in India was established on March 17, 2026, when the British Council signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SPARK – The 100K Collective in New Delhi. This initiative, championed by Smriti Irani, founder of the Alliance for Global Good – Gender Equity and Equality, seeks to enhance women’s economic participation through institutional collaborations. The program aims to support nearly 100,000 women entrepreneurs, particularly those facing barriers in scaling their businesses.

Focus on the “Missing Middle”

The newly launched program is designed to assist women entrepreneurs who fall into the “missing middle” category. This group includes individuals who have progressed beyond small-scale operations but encounter difficulties in expanding their businesses due to limited access to essential skills, networks, and resources. By targeting this segment, the initiative aims to bridge the gap and provide the necessary support for these entrepreneurs to thrive.

The British Council will play a crucial role in this partnership by offering training in English, communication, and digital skills. These training sessions are intended to empower women entrepreneurs to enhance their business pitches, broaden their professional networks, and access larger markets. Additionally, the collaboration aims to create a comprehensive support ecosystem that addresses governance, compliance, visibility, and leadership development, ensuring that women entrepreneurs are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of the business landscape.

Voices of Support

During the signing event, Smriti Irani emphasized the critical need for cross-sector collaboration to promote gender equity. She stated, “The Alliance for Global Good – Gender Equity and Equality was founded on the belief that advancing gender equity requires strong collaboration across institutions and sectors.” Irani praised the resilience and leadership demonstrated by women entrepreneurs across India and expressed confidence that initiatives like this would enable them to transform their ambitions into sustainable enterprises, thereby contributing significantly to India’s economic future.

Scott McDonald, Chief Executive of the British Council, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of education and skills in creating opportunities. He remarked, “At the British Council, we see education, skills, and connections as powerful drivers of opportunity.” McDonald expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting that it would help women entrepreneurs build the capabilities necessary for business growth and full participation in the economy.

Global Integration and Future Prospects

Lindy Cameron, another key figure in the initiative, underscored the potential for women entrepreneurs to integrate into global supply chains through enhanced language and communication skills. This aspect of the program is particularly significant as it opens doors for women-led businesses to engage with international markets.

Susan Acland-Hood, Permanent Secretary at the UK’s Department for Education, described the program as a promising example of how access to language and communication can broaden opportunities not only in India but on a global scale. The signing of the agreement took place at the British Council’s New Delhi office, attended by senior representatives from both organizations. This partnership marks a continued commitment to establishing structured, scalable support systems for women-led enterprises, focusing on long-term growth and economic inclusion.
