PM Modi and Brazil President Lula Forge Rare Earths Agreement to Enhance Trade Beyond $20 Billion

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have set an ambitious goal to elevate bilateral trade to $20 billion within the next five years. During a joint press conference in New Delhi, the leaders announced key agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in various sectors, including rare earth minerals, digital partnerships, and mining. This initiative marks a significant step in deepening the strategic and economic ties between India and Brazil.

Strengthening Economic Ties

The discussions between Modi and Lula focused on expanding cooperation across multiple sectors to bolster the India-Brazil strategic partnership. Modi expressed his enthusiasm for Lula’s visit, highlighting the long-standing benefits of Lula’s leadership in fostering India-Brazil relations. He emphasized that the target of $20 billion in bilateral trade is not merely a numerical goal but a testament to the trust shared between the two nations. Modi also pointed out that Brazil is India’s largest trading partner in Latin America, underscoring the importance of the India-MERCOSUR trade agreement in enhancing economic collaboration.

Three significant agreements were signed during the meeting. These include a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a digital partnership, an MoU on cooperation in rare earths and critical minerals, and an MoU on mining and steel supply chains. Modi described the agreement on critical minerals as crucial in light of global supply chain challenges, stating it represents a major step toward building resilient supply chains. The leaders also discussed expanding cooperation in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and blockchain, with plans to establish a Centre of Excellence for Digital Public Infrastructure in Brazil.

Focus on Renewable Energy

Energy cooperation emerged as a pivotal aspect of the talks, with both leaders agreeing to enhance collaboration in renewable energy and sustainable fuels. Modi noted that energy has long been a strong pillar of the India-Brazil relationship. The discussions included topics such as ethanol blending and sustainable aviation fuel, reflecting a shared commitment to a greener future. Modi welcomed Brazil’s participation in global climate initiatives, particularly its role in the Global Biofuel Alliance, which aligns with both countries’ goals for sustainable development.

The emphasis on renewable energy signifies a mutual recognition of the importance of sustainable practices in addressing global energy needs. The collaboration aims to leverage Brazil’s expertise in biofuels and India’s advancements in renewable technologies, creating a comprehensive approach to energy security and environmental sustainability.

Strategic Dialogue and Global Cooperation

President Lula characterized the meeting as a partnership between two significant global powers of the Global South. He expressed his happiness in returning to India for the sixth time, highlighting the strategic importance of the India-Brazil relationship. Lula referred to India as a “digital superpower” and emphasized the need for both nations to strengthen their strategic dialogue in light of a turbulent global landscape. He pointed out that India and Brazil are crucial voices in international forums such as the UN, WTO, and G20.

Lula’s visit included a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan and delegation-level talks with Modi at Hyderabad House. He also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, reflecting the historical ties between the two nations. Accompanied by a large delegation of Brazilian business leaders, Lula’s visit aims to foster commercial partnerships and expand economic cooperation, building on the momentum generated by Modi’s visit to Brazil in July 2025.

The discussions and agreements reached during this visit signal a commitment to enhancing bilateral relations, with both countries poised to benefit from increased trade, technological collaboration, and strategic alignment on global issues.
