Mumbai Court Issues Restraint on CarryMinati Over Defamatory Claims Against Karan Johar

A Mumbai court has issued a temporary injunction against popular YouTuber Ajey Nagar, known as CarryMinati, and his talent manager Deepak Char, prohibiting them from sharing any defamatory content about filmmaker Karan Johar on social media. The ruling, made on February 9 by Principal Sessions Judge P.G. Bhonsale, follows a legal complaint filed by Johar through Apoorva Mehta, CEO of Dharma Productions. The court’s decision underscores the serious nature of the allegations made against Nagar and Char.

Allegations of Defamation

Karan Johar’s legal action stems from claims that CarryMinati and others have disseminated defamatory remarks about him in various YouTube videos. In his petition, Johar described the statements as “vulgar and abusive,” asserting that they warranted immediate removal. The defense, representing Nagar, contended that the videos in question had already been deleted, suggesting that there was no reason for the court to intervene. However, Johar countered this argument by highlighting that the videos had amassed millions of views before their removal. He expressed concern that unauthorized individuals were creating reels from the original content and circulating them on social media, perpetuating the defamatory statements.

Court’s Response and Injunction

After reviewing the arguments presented, the court found sufficient grounds to believe that Nagar and Char had indeed made defamatory statements against Johar. The judge emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, “These videos need to be taken down immediately.” The court granted an ad-interim injunction, which prohibits not only Nagar and Char but also unnamed parties, referred to as John Doe, from posting or sharing any further defamatory content about Johar. This temporary order will remain in effect until the court hears Johar’s application for interim relief.

Action Against Social Media Platforms

In addition to restraining the defendants, the court directed Meta Platforms to remove the flagged video links associated with the lawsuit. This action reflects the court’s commitment to addressing the spread of potentially harmful content on social media. The case will continue to be examined as the court prepares to consider Johar’s plea for further interim relief. The outcome of this legal battle may have significant implications for content creators and the responsibilities they hold regarding the material they publish online.
