Odisha Takes Center Stage in New Ocean and Nuclear Development Plans
The Eastern Coastal Region is set to gain significant attention under the current budget’s Nuclear and Marine strategy, with Odisha being one of four states chosen for a new Rare Earth Corridor. This initiative, complemented by provisions for deep sea fishing, promises to bring transformative changes to the state’s economy and marine resources.
This pivotal development was highlighted by Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, during a meeting with Odisha’s Science & Technology Minister, Krushna Chandra Patra. Dr. Singh outlined an ambitious roadmap focusing on the Eastern Coastal region, encompassing the Deep Ocean Mission, the expansion of nuclear resources, fisheries reforms within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), as well as plans for a Bio-E3 Cell and a new Department of Biotechnology (DBT) center in Odisha.
A Unified Development Framework
Dr. Singh emphasized that Odisha will play a crucial role in the eastern coastal strategy, which aims to harmonize development across various domains including marine resources, mineral corridors, nuclear and space infrastructure, and life sciences research. For the first time, these ocean resources are being systematically harnessed through coordinated efforts between central institutes and the state government, aimed at executing effective ocean-related programs.
The discussions also covered the implementation of the Deep Ocean Mission, which aims to support deep sea fishing in India’s EEZ, creating new economic opportunities for Odisha’s coastal communities. Regulatory reforms in the fisheries sector were also part of the agenda.
Exploring Rare Earth & Nuclear Resources
On the critical front of rare earth minerals, both leaders delved into the potential for developing a rare earth corridor in the eastern region, paving the way for expanding nuclear mineral exploration beyond the traditional strongholds in the southern states. This expansion could open new avenues for Odisha, highlighting its significance in national resource strategy.
Dr. Singh stated that Odisha stands to gain considerably from recent budget allocations and national initiatives. With an operational space center in the state and established life sciences institutions, enhanced collaboration is anticipated to accelerate advancements in research and innovation.
Future Prospects
The proposal for establishing a Bio-E3 Cell in Odisha and discussing the DBT center also demonstrates the commitment to bolstering scientific infrastructure in the state. Both leaders agreed to ensure close coordination for the timely execution of projects across ocean science, atomic minerals, space research, and biotechnology, positioning Odisha as a vital component in India’s science-led growth trajectory.
