India Prioritizes Sustainable Farming to Combat Climate Change
The Indian government is taking significant steps to enhance agricultural sustainability amid growing concerns about climate change. With a focus on climate-resilient, carbon-neutral, and regenerative agriculture, various initiatives have been launched to address resource degradation and ensure food security. The National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture is at the forefront, promoting farming practices that align with modern environmental challenges.
Key Schemes Promoting Sustainable Agriculture
Among the initiatives, the ‘Per Drop More Crop’ scheme stands out as it enhances water efficiency at the farm level through cutting-edge micro-irrigation technologies, including drip and sprinkler systems. The ‘Rainfed Area Development’ program emphasizes Integrated Farming Systems to boost productivity while minimizing risks related to climate variability. In addition, the ‘Soil Health & Fertility’ initiative advocates for integrated nutrient management through the careful use of chemical fertilizers.
Insurance and Support for Farmers
Ensuring economic support for farmers, the ‘Pradhan Mantri Fasa Bima Yojana’ and Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme offer extensive coverage for those experiencing crop loss due to natural calamities. This safety net is crucial for farmers facing the unpredictable impacts of climate change.
Research and Innovation in Climate Resilience
To further bolster efforts, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is executing the National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) project. This undertaking assesses the risks posed by climate change across agricultural districts, identifying 310 regions as climatically vulnerable. Of these, 109 districts are classified as ‘very high’ and 201 as ‘highly’ vulnerable.
Through NICRA, farmers are introduced to location-specific climate-resilient technologies, such as zero tillage for wheat sowing and various drought-resistant crop varieties. Capacity-building initiatives are also in place, focusing on community seed banks and nurseries, thus ensuring that farmers have access to the appropriate resources.
Integrated Approaches for Enhanced Agriculture
The government is committed to aligning agricultural strategies with overarching agronomic priorities like digital transformation and natural farming methods. This approach aims to foster a seamless, effective integration of various agricultural schemes, optimizing resources and enhancing overall implementation strategies. In support of these efforts, 731 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) have been established to facilitate technology assessment, demonstration, and capacity development among farmers.
