PM Modi Unveils $175 Million Economic Package to Strengthen India-Seychelles Relations

India has unveiled a substantial development assistance package of $175 million for Seychelles, following a significant meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Patrick Herminie. This announcement marks a pivotal moment in the bilateral relationship, as both leaders discussed a comprehensive vision to enhance cooperation across various sectors. The meeting resulted in the signing of seven agreements aimed at fostering collaboration in areas such as digital solutions, maritime research, and trade, signaling a new phase in India-Seychelles relations.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

During their discussions, Modi and Herminie emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral ties, particularly in the context of sustainability, trade, and security. Modi highlighted that the partnership between India and Seychelles transcends mere diplomatic relations, rooted in a shared history and cultural connections that have flourished over centuries. The leaders agreed to bolster cooperation in hydrography, which is essential for Seychelles’ blue economy initiatives. To support this, Seychelles plans to establish a Hydrographic Unit with assistance from India, showcasing a commitment to sustainable maritime practices.

Development Assistance Package

The $175 million development assistance package is a cornerstone of the renewed partnership. It includes $125 million in the form of a rupee-denominated Line of Credit and $50 million as grant support. This funding will be directed towards various projects, including social housing, e-mobility, vocational training, healthcare, and maritime security. Additionally, India will provide 1,000 metric tonnes of grains and lentils to Seychelles as part of this initiative. Modi reiterated India’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and supplying affordable medicines, further solidifying the cooperative framework between the two nations.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

Modi also underscored the shared commitment to sustainable development, particularly in energy and climate initiatives. He expressed India’s intention to expand collaboration in renewable energy and climate-adaptive solutions, which are crucial for both nations. The discussions included plans for India to share expertise in marine research and data sharing, reinforcing the scientific and technological aspects of their partnership. This focus on sustainability aligns with global efforts to address climate change and promote environmental stewardship.

Defence and Maritime Security Cooperation

Defence cooperation and maritime security emerged as vital components of the India-Seychelles partnership. Modi welcomed Seychelles as a full member of the Colombo Security Conclave, a regional security framework aimed at enhancing coordination among member states. This inclusion is expected to strengthen mutual efforts to maintain peace and stability in the Indian Ocean region. The leaders’ discussions highlighted the importance of collaborative security measures, ensuring that both nations can effectively address emerging challenges in their maritime domains.
