2030 Agenda Calls for Increased Collaboration and Focus on Results, UN Partnership Forum Highlights

Amid escalating global challenges, the Economic and Social Council’s annual Partnership Forum emphasized the urgent need for collaboration among governments, civil society, and the private sector to meet sustainable development goals. Council President Lok Bahadur Thapa highlighted the pressing issues of natural disasters, conflicts, and poverty that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. She noted that the 2030 Agenda is alarmingly off-track, with global hunger levels rising since 2015 and millions lacking adequate housing. Mohammed pointed out that the SDGs face a staggering financing gap of over $4 trillion, which cannot be closed through rhetoric alone.

She urged participants to take the insights gained from the Forum beyond its walls and into the global community. The need for concrete partnerships was emphasized as essential for driving progress toward the SDGs. Clean Energy Access as a Catalyst for Change

Keynote speaker Sheila Oparaocha, Director of the ENERGIA International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy, focused on the critical role of clean energy access in achieving sustainable development. She described clean energy as a “hinge point” for addressing urgent global challenges, including economic inequality and climate vulnerability. Oparaocha shared the story of Randa, a mother in rural Senegal, to illustrate the real-life implications of energy poverty.

With over 600 million people lacking electricity and 2 billion without access to clean cooking fuels, Oparaocha emphasized that these statistics represent lived experiences. She called for collective commitment and strong partnerships to make real progress toward the 2030 Agenda. The energy compacts initiative has already mobilized significant resources and created millions of green jobs, showcasing the potential of collaborative efforts in the clean energy sector.

Unlocking Scientific Potential for Sustainable Solutions

Yensi Flores-Bueso, a member of the Secretary-General’s Independent Group of Scientists, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the need to break down silos in scientific research. She highlighted the vast potential of nature as a source of development solutions that humanity has yet to fully explore. Flores-Bueso argued that science should serve humanity more effectively by fostering open and equitable research cultures.

She called for governments, funders, and universities to prioritize accessible scientific knowledge and create partnerships that bridge disciplines. By promoting open science as an essential infrastructure, participants were encouraged to unlock the full potential of scientific research in addressing global challenges. The Forum served as a platform for these vital discussions, aiming to inspire actionable solutions for sustainable development.
