Aanand L Rai Responds to Rs 84 Crore Raanjhanaa IP Lawsuit: “I Don’t Think It Holds Any Meaning”
Filmmaker Aanand L Rai is facing a significant legal challenge as Eros International Media Ltd has filed a lawsuit seeking Rs 84 crore. The lawsuit accuses Rai and his production company, Colour Yellow Media Entertainment LLP, of unauthorized use of intellectual property related to the 2013 film Raanjhanaa. Rai has responded to the allegations, describing the situation as a routine business matter that does not require public speculation.
Rai’s Response to Legal Action
In a recent statement to NDTV, Aanand L Rai addressed the lawsuit, emphasizing that such disputes are common in the business world. He expressed uncertainty about the origins of the lawsuit, stating, “I don’t even know why, how, or from where this has come.” Rai indicated that the matter is now in the hands of legal professionals, suggesting that it is not something to be taken too seriously. He remarked, “Anyone can say anything about anything at any time,” and reiterated that the legal teams will handle the situation. Rai’s comments reflect a desire to downplay the seriousness of the allegations while acknowledging the legal process at play.
Eros International’s Allegations
Eros International Media Ltd claims that Rai and Colour Yellow Media Entertainment unlawfully utilized elements from *Raanjhanaa* during the promotion of their film *Tere Ishk Mein*, which premiered in November 2025. The company asserts that it holds exclusive rights to various aspects of *Raanjhanaa*, including copyright, registered trademarks, characters, dialogues, and rights for sequels or remakes. Eros’s lawsuit argues that these protected elements were used without permission, creating an impression of a narrative connection between the two films. The dispute reportedly began after a teaser for *Tere Ishk Mein* was released in July 2025, which Eros claims included phrases and visual cues linked to the *Raanjhanaa* universe.
Character Similarities and Claims of a ‘Spiritual Sequel’
A significant aspect of the lawsuit centers on alleged character parallels between *Tere Ishk Mein* and *Raanjhanaa*. Eros claims that the character played by Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub in *Tere Ishk Mein* bears a striking resemblance to his role as Murari in *Raanjhanaa*, both in personality and narrative function. Additionally, the company argues that Dhanush’s character in the new film follows a similar emotional arc to that of Kundan Shankar from *Raanjhanaa*, suggesting a continuity between the two stories. Despite Eros issuing a cease-and-desist notice in July 2025, the marketing for *Tere Ishk Mein* continued to position it as a “spiritual sequel” to *Raanjhanaa*. Following the film’s release, Eros is pursuing Rs 84 crore in damages, citing copyright infringement, trademark violation, and passing off. The lawsuit names several defendants, including Rai, Colour Yellow Media Entertainment, writer Himanshu Sharma, Super Cassettes Industries (T-Series), and Netflix Entertainment Services India LLP, and the case is currently pending before the Bombay High Court.
