India Launches Mobile Stroke Units to Revolutionize Care in Assam
Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in India, where prompt medical intervention is critical. Recognizing the importance of timely treatment, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has introduced two Mobile Stroke Units (MSU) to the Government of Assam. This innovative initiative aims to bring advanced stroke care directly to patients, particularly in remote regions where access to hospitals can be a challenge.
The MSUs represent a pivotal shift in addressing stroke emergencies. Previously, patients from rural areas often faced significant hurdles in reaching stroke-ready hospitals. With the support of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, the ICMR’s move underscores the government’s commitment to delivering essential healthcare services to marginalized populations across tough geographical landscapes.
Enhancing Emergency Response for Stroke Patients
During the handover ceremony, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary of the Department of Health Research and Director General of ICMR, highlighted that Mobile Stroke Units were first developed in Germany and have undergone evaluations in various global cities. India has made significant strides, marking itself as the second country worldwide to successfully integrate MSUs with emergency medical services for rural stroke patients. This development promises faster and more effective treatment for individuals experiencing acute strokes.
Innovation on Wheels
The Mobile Stroke Unit is essentially a mobile hospital that comes equipped with cutting-edge technology. It contains a CT scanner for immediate brain scans, teleconsultation capabilities for specialist consultations, on-site laboratory tests, and clot-dissolving medications. This setup enables early diagnosis and treatment at or near patients’ homes, which is especially beneficial in the rugged terrains of Northeast India, where reaching a hospital can take hours.
Transforming Stroke Care in Northeast India
The Northeast region suffers from a high incidence of stroke, compounded by challenging terrain and limited access to specialized medical care. To combat this, the ICMR has set up neurologist-led stroke units at Assam Medical College & Hospital and physician-led units at Tezpur Medical College Hospital and Baptist Christian Hospital, Tezpur. The new MSUs are integrated into this established pre-hospital stroke care framework.
The results from implementing this model have been nothing short of revolutionary. Treatment times have dramatically decreased from nearly 24 hours to just about 2 hours, leading to a one-third reduction in mortality rates and an eight-fold decrease in long-term disabilities among stroke victims. From 2021 to August 2024, the MSU received over 2,300 emergency calls, and trained nurses screened 294 suspected stroke cases, successfully treating 90% of these patients directly in their homes. Additionally, the MSUs have been integrated with the 108 emergency ambulance service, expanding their operational reach to a 100 km radius.
