Supreme Court Stays Out of Jana Nayagan Release Dispute; Madras HC to Rule by January 20
The Supreme Court of India has opted not to intervene in the ongoing controversy regarding the certification and release of the much-anticipated Tamil film Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay. The case will continue to be addressed by the Madras High Court, which has been urged to reach a decision by January 20, 2026. This development leaves the film’s release, initially scheduled for earlier this month, in a state of uncertainty.
Legal Proceedings and Certification Delays
The producers of Jana Nayagan, KVN Productions, sought the Supreme Court’s intervention after the Madras High Court temporarily halted an earlier directive that required the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a U/A certificate for the film. This stay has left the film’s release in limbo, prompting the producers to take legal action. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing KVN Productions, argued that the delay in obtaining certification was causing “serious injury” to the film’s release schedule and promotional investments, which are often time-sensitive.
During the proceedings, a bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and A.G. Masih emphasized that the Madras High Court is already handling the matter and has scheduled a further hearing for January 20. The Supreme Court noted that it would not be appropriate to bypass the High Court’s process at this stage, opting instead to allow all arguments to be presented before the High Court.

Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth, features a star-studded cast, including Pooja Hegde, Prakash Raj, and Gautham Vasudev Menon.
