X Introduces Grok to Prevent Edits of Revealing Clothing Images

X has implemented new restrictions on the image-editing capabilities of its chatbot Grok following significant public backlash regarding the tool’s handling of sensitive visual content. The company announced that it has updated its systems to prevent Grok from altering images of real individuals into revealing clothing, such as bikinis. This decision was communicated via the @Safety account, where X stated that technical controls have been added to mitigate potential misuse of the tool.

New Restrictions for All Users

The recent changes affect all users of Grok, including those who subscribe to the service. X has made it clear that no user will be permitted to use the chatbot to modify images of real people in ways that involve revealing clothing, including bikinis and underwear. This move aims to prevent misuse that could lead to harm or violations of local laws. The company emphasized its commitment to ensuring that the platform remains safe and compliant with regulations.

In addition to these editing restrictions, X has decided to place all image-generation tools behind a subscription paywall. As a result, users who do not pay for Grok will no longer have the ability to create images using the chatbot. Furthermore, X will restrict the generation of images depicting real individuals in revealing clothing in regions where such content is prohibited by local laws. These limitations will be enforced across both the Grok account and the Grok feature within X.

California Investigation and Public Scrutiny

The announcement of these new measures comes in the wake of an investigation initiated by the state of California into xAI and Grok. Authorities are examining how the company has responded to reports of AI-generated nudity and content involving minors. California Attorney General Rob Bonta referenced a report that analyzed approximately 20,000 images generated by xAI over a brief period. Alarmingly, the report indicated that more than half of these images depicted individuals in minimal clothing, with some images potentially involving children.

This scrutiny has heightened concerns about the ethical implications of AI-generated content and its potential impact on vulnerable populations. As the investigation unfolds, xAI faces increasing pressure to ensure that its tools are used responsibly and do not contribute to harmful practices.

Company’s Commitment to Safety

In its official statement, X reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward child exploitation. The company has made it clear that it prohibits high-priority content that violates its guidelines, including child sexual abuse material and non-consensual nudity. Elon Musk, the company’s CEO, previously stated that he was unaware of any instances where Grok had generated nude images of underage individuals. He later clarified that when the not-safe-for-work setting is activated, Grok may permit limited nudity involving imaginary adult figures, but not real people. Musk also noted that these rules are subject to local laws.

Several countries have already taken action against Grok due to safety concerns. Malaysia and Indonesia have recently blocked access to the chatbot, citing issues related to the handling of AI-generated sexual content. In the United Kingdom, media regulator Ofcom is currently investigating xAI and Grok, with officials indicating they would support a ban if necessary. X has committed to continually reviewing its tools and policies as regulators assess the implications of AI-generated content.
