Essar Energy Transition Achieves Record Sales Amidst Major Infrastructure Growth
Essar Energy Transition has announced that 2025 has been a landmark year for the Stanlow refinery located in Ellesmere Port, Liverpool. This follows a substantial investment phase, resulting in their highest ever domestic sales since the company’s acquisition in 2011. The remarkable growth affirms Essar’s critical role in bolstering the UK’s energy security amidst robust demand for refined products.
2025: A Year of Unprecedented Growth
The year 2025 proved to be a transformative period for Essar Energy Transition, characterized by significant advancements in operational efficiency and market presence. The company successfully implemented a comprehensive pan-UK strategy, which enabled it to enhance its distribution capabilities and expand its customer reach. Operational throughput surged by 8% compared to 2024, with dispatch volumes at the Stanlow refinery nearing historic highs, underscoring the facility’s reliability and efficiency.
Essar’s diversified growth strategy yielded fruitful results across various sectors. For instance, the retail division expanded rapidly, increasing its footprint with 58 Essar-branded retail forecourts and establishing fuel supply agreements with over 100 dealer-operated sites across the UK. The successful implementation of a price reduction campaign in late 2025 further stimulated demand, demonstrating the company’s effective response to market conditions.
In the aviation sector, Essar significantly broadened its network by directly supplying fuel to ten major airports. This strategic growth underscores the company’s commitment to enhancing its service delivery across all customer segments.
Investment in Decarbonization and Future Sustainability
Among its significant achievements, Essar made a noteworthy $100 million investment in a major ‘turnaround’ operation at the Stanlow refinery, one of the most significant projects in the facility’s history. This initiative is part of a larger $350 million investment program aimed at improving operational efficiency. The turnaround not only maintained existing capabilities but also augmented throughput by about 8%, marking a significant leap towards sustainable refining practices. Additionally, the installation of the UK’s first hydrogen-ready furnace represents a critical milestone in the refinery’s journey toward decarbonization.
The achievements of 2025 emphasize the importance of a thriving domestic refining sector. Essar Energy Transition advocates for the inclusion of refining in the UK’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to ensure a fair competitive landscape for domestic producers against high-carbon imports. This step is deemed essential for the long-term viability of the sector and the security of the UK’s energy supply.
As Deepak Maheshwari, CEO of EET Fuels, expressed, “I am delighted with the performance of Stanlow in 2025. This record-breaking year reflects the dedication of our team and our commitment to ensuring Stanlow remains pivotal to the UK economy. Our continued investment is crucial for a sustainable future in the refining sector, which must adapt to the challenges posed by a shifting energy landscape.”
