Fraud Alert: NHAI Warns Against FASTag Annual Pass Scams

If you’re considering purchasing or renewing an annual FASTag pass, be cautious. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued a warning about a new online scam targeting vehicle owners. Fraudulent websites and unauthorized links are misleading consumers by falsely claiming to offer FASTag annual passes. Victims of these scams have reported losses of up to Rs. 3,000, prompting the NHAI to alert the public about the potential risks involved.
Warning from Authorities
The NHAI has made it clear that the only legitimate way to obtain a FASTag annual pass is through the official Rajmargyatra mobile application. Any claims made by websites, social media links, or messages offering a one-year FASTag pass outside of this app should be considered fraudulent. The authority has observed a concerning increase in complaints regarding fake FASTag passes. In a recent public message on the social media platform X, NHAI urged highway users to refrain from clicking on unknown links and to avoid unauthorized sellers. They emphasized that no other platform has been authorized to sell FASTag annual passes. Sharing sensitive information such as FASTag numbers, vehicle registration details, or payment information on these fraudulent platforms can lead to significant financial loss.
The FASTag annual pass is designed for private cars, jeeps, and vans. It facilitates seamless toll payments without the need for cash. According to the Indian Highway Management Company Limited, the pass is valid for one year or for 200 toll trips, whichever comes first. This initiative aims to minimize waiting times at toll plazas and promote digital payments across national highways.
Safety Tips To Stay Safe
To protect yourself from potential scams, it is crucial to follow certain safety guidelines when purchasing FASTag products. Users should only buy FASTag passes through official bank applications or the NPCI MyFASTag portal. It is advisable to ignore any unsolicited calls, messages, or WhatsApp texts that request users to scan QR codes or click on links for pass verification, as these are common tactics employed by scammers to steal login credentials.
The NHAI also recommends that users activate SMS or email alerts for every FASTag transaction and regularly check their balances using official apps. Any unexpected deductions should be reported immediately to the issuing bank or the NHAI helpline at 1033. Users must never share their OTPs, FASTag IDs, or vehicle details with anyone claiming to provide assistance.
If you suspect that you have fallen victim to fraud, it is essential to report the incident promptly on cybercrime.gov.in, providing all relevant details. Additionally, contacting your bank to block the FASTag account and filing a complaint can help mitigate further losses and safeguard personal information. The NHAI stresses that taking timely action is vital in preventing additional financial harm and protecting sensitive data.
