Indian Railways Enhances Travel with Modern Coaches and Safety Measures
In a significant move to prioritize the needs of everyday travelers, Indian Railways is undertaking extensive modernization of its infrastructure and services. The initiative aims to enhance travel experiences by making train journeys more convenient, comfortable, safe, and affordable. Through focused investments, operational reforms, and technological advancements, the organization is committed to a passenger-first approach that addresses the demands of common passengers.
Record Production of Modern Coaches
Indian Railways has set a new benchmark in producing General and non-AC coaches, incorporating modern facilities to cater to the growing demand while keeping fares affordable. This increase in production not only enhances comfort for travelers but also boosts the overall carrying capacity of the rail system. As part of its strategic planning, Indian Railways aims to introduce a total of 9,640 new LHB GS and Non-AC coaches throughout the fiscal years 2025-26 and 2026-27.
Scaling Up Special Train Operations
To effectively manage the seasonal and festive rush anticipated in 2025, Indian Railways significantly increased its operational capacity, running over 43,000 special train trips. This included dedicated services for events such as Maha Kumbh and Holi, ensuring smoother travel experiences during peak seasons. These measures facilitated timely connectivity and eased congestion at critical times.
In their effort to enhance crowd management and pre-boarding comfort, Indian Railways is developing passenger holding areas at 76 major stations across the country. The newly implemented Yatri Suvidha Kendra at New Delhi Railway Station serves as a model for these areas, which are designed to accommodate thousands of travelers with essential facilities, including toilets and ticket vending machines. Construction of these areas is expected to be completed before the upcoming festival season in 2026.
Strengthening Ticketing Integrity
Indian Railways is also reinforcing its ticketing system by integrating Aadhaar verification to ensure that only genuine passengers receive confirmed tickets. This initiative has proven effective, resulting in the deactivation of 5.73 crore suspicious user accounts on the IRCTC platform. Moreover, only Aadhaar-verified users can book Tatkal tickets, significantly improving the integrity of the ticketing process.
Safety remains a top priority for Indian Railways, with a substantial portion of the allocated budget dedicated to safety-related works. Recent years have seen a dramatic reduction in consequential train accidents, dropping from 135 in 2014-15 to just 11 in 2025-26, thanks to increased funding and advanced safety measures, including fog safety devices.
Introduction of Amrit Bharat and Namo Bharat Trains
The introduction of Amrit Bharat Express trains marks a significant step towards enhancing non-AC and regional rail connectivity. These trains offer high-quality travel options at economical prices, with 30 services currently in operation across the network. Additionally, the launch of Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services is expected to improve accessibility and foster regional connectivity, underscoring Indian Railways’ commitment to enhancing passenger transport.
