BIS Marks 79th Foundation Day with Innovative Launches in New Delhi
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) celebrated its 79th Foundation Day in New Delhi today, unveiling several key initiatives aimed at bolstering the country’s standards ecosystem. The event was attended by Shri Prahlad Joshi, the Hon’ble Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and New & Renewable Energy, along with Shri B. L. Verma, the Hon’ble Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Social Justice & Empowerment.
BIS, serving as India’s National Standards Body under the Department of Consumer Affairs, plays a vital role in enhancing product safety and reliability, currently maintaining over 23,300 Indian Standards. The organisation is committed to fostering innovation and digital transformation to improve the quality of goods and services across various sectors.
Union Minister Prahlad Joshi Highlights BIS’s Evolution
In his speech, Shri Prahlad Joshi discussed BIS’s ongoing transformation in standardisation practices, noting a significant shift towards international best practices. He pointed out that Indian Standards are now extensive, addressing newer sectors such as renewable energy, electric mobility, smart infrastructure, digital technologies, and sustainability.
Under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership, BIS has transitioned from a regulatory body to a facilitator, promoting a culture of quality throughout the last decade. The government has introduced measures such as simplifying compliance processes for businesses, particularly benefiting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with reduced fees and improved market surveillance strategies.
New Initiatives Unveiled
During the Foundation Day event, several initiatives were launched:
- Beta Launch of the BIS Standardisation Portal: This digital platform streamlines the entire standards development process, promoting transparency and collaboration.
- SHINE Scheme: This initiative empowers women by educating them about Indian Standards, thereby enhancing the quality of life within households and communities.
- BIS Educational Literature: Engaging comic books aimed at children have been developed to instill quality consciousness from an early age, now available on the Rashtriya E Pustakalay platform.
- Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs): BIS signed agreements with premier institutions to embed standards education within academic curriculums, ensuring engineers are well-versed in standardisation practices.
- BIS-SAKSHAM Recognition Scheme: This initiative acknowledges knowledge and skills across the organization, fostering a culture of excellence.
Consumer Trust and Digital Advancements
Shri Bharat Khera, Additional Secretary at the Department of Consumer Affairs, reiterated the importance of BIS in building consumer confidence and supporting the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. He emphasized the significance of clear communication regarding standards, highlighting projects like the BIS Care App that enhance consumer empowerment.
Furthermore, Shri Sanjay Garg, Director General of BIS, called 2025 a landmark year, reporting that BIS has developed over 600 new standards and successfully expanded its product certification initiatives. The Foundation Day proceedings were attended by various stakeholders, signifying a collective effort toward strengthening India’s quality architecture and promoting a culture of quality across the nation.
