Rajasthan’s Handicrafts Shine at New Delhi Exhibition
The Kunj Mall in New Delhi was the bustling backdrop for the inauguration of a unique exhibition, curated by the Jodhpur City Knowledge & Innovation Cluster (JCKIC), that celebrates the rich tapestry of Rajasthan’s handicrafts and artisan innovations. Led by the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, the event showcased a stunning array of handlooms and design-registered products created under national science, technology, and livelihood initiatives. Distinguished guests including Dr. Parvinder Maini and various officials from the Ministry of Textiles and educational institutions joined in this significant launch.
Empowering Artisans Through Innovation
The exhibition features artisanal products and interactive initiatives such as the Kalaanubhav.in platform and the innovative Dharohar phygital museum. These initiatives highlight JCKIC’s comprehensive approach towards fostering design innovation and enhancing digital outreach. The Kunj represents a pioneering effort to empower artisans by improving their market access and uplifting India’s craft sector, perfectly aligning with the central government’s vision of bringing artisans ‘from gaon to global.’
Invitation to Explore
During the inauguration, Prof. Sood encouraged attendees to immerse themselves in the displays, stating, “This collaboration reflects how ministries and Science and Technology (S&T) Clusters can work together to preserve heritage while enhancing market access and economic opportunities for artisans.” He urged stakeholders to broaden these beneficial initiatives to reinforce artisan livelihoods across diverse regions.
Fostering Artisan Livelihoods
JCKIC is focused on bolstering artisan livelihoods utilizing S&T-enabled interventions, such as immersive AR/VR tools, alongside promoting the preservation and global recognition of indigenous crafts. The Ministry of Textiles has also allocated a dedicated space at The Kunj for JCKIC to display Rajasthan’s traditional crafts and tech-infused innovations.
A Flagship Initiative
The S&T Clusters initiative is a flagship program launched by the OPSA in 2020, recommended by the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC). This initiative fosters a consortium-based, demand-driven model designed to create integrated ecosystems among industry, MSMEs, academia, and government entities to tackle regional challenges via coordinated interventions in support of national objectives like Atmanirbhar Bharat. Currently, there are eight established S&T Clusters across various locations, each contributing to the collective goal of innovation and development.
