India Revamps Doordarshan and Akashvani for Enhanced Broadcasting
The Government of India is implementing significant measures to enhance the performance and reach of Doordarshan and Akashvani amid a highly competitive broadcasting landscape. As part of its efforts to improve content diversity and quality, a revised Content Sourcing Policy was launched in 2024, aimed at facilitating quicker program acquisitions and encouraging broader participation.
Engaging Local Content and Events
In a bid to celebrate regional culture, new programs are frequently introduced, with Regional and State Centres collaborating with local artists to produce content in various regional languages. To attract top-tier talent and bolster the quality of local productions, the remuneration rates for Artists and Casual Assignees have been increased across the 66 Programme Production Centres of Doordarshan.
Doordarshan continues to capture national attention through live coverage of significant events. Key broadcasts include the Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, WAVES 2025 in Mumbai, and updates on ISRO satellite launches, ensuring extensive public engagement.
Technological Innovations and New Platforms
The modernization of services includes broadcasting several Doordarshan channels in High Definition (HD) and enhancing its digital footprint with the launch of the OTT platform called “WAVES.” This platform integrates Doordarshan’s channel offerings and is coupled with the Online NewsONAIR mobile app, making content more accessible.
