Lakshadweep Hosts First Investors’ Meet to Boost Fisheries Sector

The Department of Fisheries has made history by organizing the first-ever Investors’ Meet in Lakshadweep, aimed at tapping into the islands’ vast fisheries potential. The event took place on December 13, 2025, at Bangaram Islands, bringing together key government officials, including Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, and various state ministers. The meet attracted around 22 investors and entrepreneurs from across India, specifically focused on tuna, deep-sea fisheries, seaweed cultivation, ornamental fisheries, and waste management.

Investment Opportunities in Fisheries

During the meeting, the Department of Fisheries outlined four significant areas ripe for investment in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Each area presents unique opportunities for growth and sustainable practices.

Tuna and Deep-Sea Fisheries Development

With nearly 20% of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone lying within Lakshadweep waters, the region is poised for substantial investment in tuna and deep-sea fisheries. Currently, production stands at around 15,000 tonnes, a mere fraction of the estimated potential of 100,000 tonnes. Investors can partake in developing a modern value chain encompassing fishing, processing, branding, and exportation. By establishing a premium identity for Lakshadweep tuna, such as “Lakshadweep Sustainable Tuna,” the islands can attract international markets. Infrastructure developments like smart fishing harbors and cold chain facilities are also on the agenda, enhancing operational efficiency.

Opportunities in Seaweed Cultivation

Covering over 4200 sq. kms, Lakshadweep’s lagoons provide an optimal environment for seaweed cultivation. As global demand for seaweed-based products soars, the government aims to establish farming systems, nurseries, and processing facilities. Recent initiatives, including a Seaweed Seed Bank and a Seaweed Hatchery, have laid a strong foundation for future growth. With a forward-looking leasing policy to facilitate offshore farming, investors can leverage the ongoing momentum while contributing positively to environmental efforts.

Cultivating Ornamental Fish

The islands are home to nearly 300 species of marine fish suited for the ornamental trade, making it an excellent location for hatcheries and broodstock development. With rising global demand for ornamental fish, investors have a timely opportunity to create sustainable breeding systems and export-oriented enterprises, boosting local employment and positioning Lakshadweep as a key player in the international market.

Offshore Cage Farming Potential

Lakshadweep has significant potential for offshore cage farming, leveraging its expansive Exclusive Economic Zone. Successful pilot initiatives in other regions, such as Odisha, have proven the viability of this sector. The government’s backing through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) further solidifies this opportunity, allowing investors to explore scalable operations within Lakshadweep.

Streamlined Investment Processes

To facilitate and encourage investment, a single-window system is being developed to ensure smooth project approvals. The recent Investors’ Meet has already generated over ₹500 crore in proposed investments, setting the stage for unlocking Lakshadweep’s immense blue economy potential while adhering to sustainable growth practices.
