CBDT Cracks Down on Bogus Tax Deductions Nationwide

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has recently intensified its crackdown on intermediaries implicated in filing income tax returns featuring fraudulent claims of deductions and exemptions. This initiative has unveiled a widespread network of agents across India, colluding to submit inaccurate returns in exchange for commissions. Investigations have revealed that substantial bogus claims were made, particularly concerning donations to Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs) or Charitable Institutions, resulting in unjustly reduced tax liabilities and fabricated refund requests.

Evidence gathered from enforcement actions suggests that many of these RUPPs are non-filers or non-operational at their registered addresses and do not partake in any political activities. Instead, they have been exploited as channels for illicit financial activities, including money laundering, hawala transactions, cross-border remittances, and the issuance of fake donation receipts. In response, the CBDT has conducted follow-up searches against several RUPPs and Trusts, uncovering incriminating evidence tied to fraudulent donation claims made by individuals and dubious Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) declarations by companies.

Enhanced Data-Driven Approach

The CBDT is leveraging its robust data-driven strategy to swiftly identify suspicious claims and detect patterns of high-risk behavior among taxpayers. A significant risk pattern has been highlighted for those making claims under sections 80GGC or 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Data analytics have unveiled concerns that numerous taxpayers might be filing deductions for contributions to dubious entities or failing to provide adequate information to verify the legitimacy of these organizations. Notably, a considerable number of taxpayers have already revised their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the current assessment year of 2025-26, with many submitting updated returns for prior years as well.

Nudge Campaign for Taxpayers

In a taxpayer-friendly initiative, the CBDT has launched a targeted NUDGE campaign, encouraging individuals to update their ITRs and retract any erroneous claims. From December 12, 2025, SMS and email advisories are being dispatched to affected taxpayers through their registered contact information.

Taxpayers are strongly urged to ensure that their mobile numbers and email addresses are accurately recorded in their filings with the Department to avoid missing crucial communications.
