Chaupal Program Launched to Boost India’s Handicrafts Sector
As part of the ongoing National Handicrafts Week celebrations, the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) of the Ministry of Textiles unveiled the Chaupal Program today in New Delhi. The event was attended by Ms. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary of Textiles, who served as the Chief Guest. The launch saw participation from senior ministry officials, nodal officers from various states, and stakeholders in the handicrafts sector.
Empowering Artisans Through the Chaupal Program
The Chaupal Program is designed to enhance awareness of traditional handicrafts, foster entrepreneurship, and create sustainable handicraft clusters in line with the National Handicrafts Development Program (NHDP). Following the guiding principles of reform, perform, transform, and inform, Chaupals will act as permanent, district-level engagement platforms aimed at artisan enrolment, scheme awareness, skill development, and entrepreneurship across 100 aspirational handicraft districts in India.
Government Commitment to Handicraft Sector
In her speech, Secretary Rao emphasized the government’s dedication to bolstering India’s rich handicrafts ecosystem and empowering grassroots artisans. She stated that the Chaupal Program will be a transformative initiative that not only raises craft awareness but also encourages youth participation and creates entrepreneurial opportunities. This initiative is expected to significantly contribute to sustainable livelihoods within handicraft clusters.
Launch of Chaupal Kits
During the event, Secretary Rao interacted with nodal officers from the 100 handicraft aspirational districts which were selected for the program’s initial phase. As part of the Chaupal Program rollout, she distributed Chaupal Kits that included audio-visual materials and equipment meant to support engaging district-level outreach. These kits aim to facilitate demonstrations, awareness sessions, capacity-building workshops, and the digital onboarding of artisans. The Chaupal Program stands as a promising step forward in energizing the handicrafts sector and nurturing the artisans who are integral to its success.
