Law Commission Celebrates International Human Rights Day
The Law Commission of India (LCI) held a special event on December 12 to commemorate International Human Rights Day, featuring Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Hon’ble Minister of State for Law & Justice, as the chief guest. This year’s theme, “Human Rights as Continuity of Indian Tradition,” emphasized India’s commitment to dignity and rights rooted in its rich civilizational context.
The celebration began with the recitation of the patriotic song Vande Mataram, setting a solemn tone for the discussions to follow. Justice (Retd.) Dinesh Maheshwari, Chairperson of the LCI, delivered a welcome address, underlining the essential role of India’s cultural and legal heritage in shaping modern human-rights discussions.
During his address, Minister Meghwal highlighted the importance of human dignity and ethical values throughout India’s historical journey. He drew upon the insightful teachings of iconic leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda, and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, emphasizing Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s pivotal role as a proponent of human rights in the country.
The event also featured discussions that revolved around the philosophical and cultural continuity of human rights within India. Ideas such as Universal Human Dignity, the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family), and the concepts of fraternity and duty were noted for their alignment with the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
As part of the observance, the LCI organized an essay competition on December 10, with the theme “Ensuring Everyday Essentials: Public Services and Dignity for All,” aimed at its officers and officials. Minister Meghwal took time to recognize and reward the winners, expressing appreciation for the thoughtful entries received from officers, legal consultants, and interns associated with the Commission. He also engaged in dialogue with the Commission’s officials, fostering a collaborative spirit.
The engaging program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. D.P. Verma, a member of LCI, followed by a final recitation of Vande Mataram. The Law Commission expressed heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Shri Meghwal for his insightful contributions and presence at the event.
