India Advancing Towards AI-Ready Cloud Infrastructure
India is set to bolster its digital governance and citizen empowerment initiatives with the development of a secure and adaptable cloud infrastructure. This initiative, sparked by the country’s shift towards digitalization and the rising demand for AI applications, is encapsulated in the national cloud framework known as MeghRaj.
The Government of India has launched the GI Cloud, or MeghRaj, under the broader Digital India initiative to fulfill the cloud demands from various sectors, including government and private entities. MeghRaj aims to provide a secure, scalable, and elastic cloud platform essential for delivering e-Governance services efficiently.
Key Features of MeghRaj
MeghRaj stands out due to its critical features including elasticity, scalability, pay-as-you-go metering, self-service provisioning, and rapid application deployment. With these capabilities, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has already facilitated cloud-based applications for a remarkable 2,170 Ministries and Departments across the country.
Collaboration with Private Sector
To enhance its cloud services, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has also partnered with 26 cloud service providers, following a rigorous audit to ensure compliance with international security standards such as ISO 27001 and ISO 20000. These providers are poised to support the cloud needs of both Central and State Ministries and Departments, further expanding MeghRaj’s reach.
NIC functions as a government-backed cloud service provider but also integrates private companies through an open tender system for cloud service provisioning.
Strengthening Data Security
The National Data Centres are designed with advanced security features to protect cloud services from potential threats. They implement a multi-layer security framework that includes standardized practices and procedures, thereby ensuring the integrity and safety of government cloud applications.
Expanding Data Centre Capacities
As digitalization accelerates, the growth of data centres in India is rapidly increasing, fueled by the widespread adoption of AI and cloud services across various sectors like banking and critical public infrastructure. Current estimates suggest that cloud data centre capacity in India has reached about 1,280 MW and is projected to quadruple by 2030.
Furthermore, global tech giants are making substantial investments in India’s AI and data centre markets. Notably, Google has committed USD 15 billion to develop an AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, marking its largest investment in India, while Amazon Web Services (AWS) is establishing a USD 8.3 billion data centre in Maharashtra.
