PM Vishwakarma Scheme: Streamlining Support for Artisans
The National Steering Committee (NSC) has recently made significant strides in implementing the PM Vishwakarma scheme, aimed at empowering artisans across India. Chaired by top officials from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Ministry of MSME, and the Department of Financial Services, the latest meeting on October 10, 2025, saw the approval of crucial proposals intended to enhance skill development and financial support for small-scale artisans.
One of the key outcomes was the establishment of eligibility criteria for Advanced Skill Training and a comprehensive plan to streamline loan processes. This includes focusing on pending applications, offering smaller loan amounts of Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1,00,000 to alleviate monthly repayment burdens, and ensuring bank representatives attend awareness camps in 716 districts through March 2026. Moreover, bank officials will be present at skill training centers to provide immediate financial guidance to participants.
Enhanced Loan Approval Process
To tackle high loan rejection rates, the Department of Financial Services has advised banks to secure written confirmations from beneficiaries opting out of loans under the PM Vishwakarma scheme. Additionally, banks are tasked with forming review committees to reach out to applicants whose loans were declined due to communication issues. The Ministry of MSME is actively working alongside DFS to broaden the outreach to potential beneficiaries, using text messages in 12 regional languages and calls from call centers to reconnect with unreachable applicants.
Comprehensive Verification Mechanism
The application process for loans follows a meticulous three-step verification system. This includes verification at the Gram Panchayat level, vetting and recommendations from the District Implementation Committee led by the District Collector, and final approval from a screening committee comprising members from various stakeholders. With a target of covering 30 lakh beneficiaries from FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28, the scheme has successfully registered an equivalent number of artisans, ensuring they access vital tools, training, loan schemes, and marketing support.
Marketing and Promotion Initiatives
Under the PM Vishwakarma scheme, artisans receive robust marketing support, including participation in trade fairs and exhibitions to showcase their handicrafts. Additionally, online sales channels are being leveraged through platforms like ONDC, Fabindia, Meesho, and GeM, to enhance visibility and sales opportunities. A national trade fair is set to take place at Delhi Haat, designed to facilitate market linkages and provide artisans exposure to broader audiences.
Future Development Plans
Looking ahead, the Ministry of MSME plans to collaborate with institutions like the National Institute of Design and the Indian Institute of Packaging to add value to PM Vishwakarma products through improved design, branding, and packaging. Plans are also underway to establish dedicated PMV Emporium/Haat in major cities across the country to promote artisanship and streamline sales of these unique products.
This transformative initiative was highlighted by the Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, in her recent address in the Lok Sabha. The government’s commitment to supporting small-scale artisans is set to create significant opportunities for skill enhancement and economic advancement in communities nationwide.
