Indian Railways Launches First Pilot Hydrogen Train
In a groundbreaking initiative, Indian Railways has unveiled its first hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant step towards greener transportation. This state-of-the-art project is being piloted in accordance with the specifications developed by the Research, Design & Standards Organization (RDSO), showcasing the use of hydrogen technology in railway travel. The manufacturing of the hydrogen train-set is now complete, with a dedicated hydrogen plant established at Jind to support its operations.
The hydrogen plant utilizes advanced electrolysis processes, a crucial technique in generating green hydrogen for the train. This innovation reflects Indian Railways’ dedication to sustainability and its commitment to the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Advanced Features of the Hydrogen Train
This hydrogen train-set, consisting of a total of ten coaches, is currently the longest and most powerful of its kind in the world. It features two Driving Power Cars (DPCs), each boasting a power output of 1200 kW, resulting in a total of 2400 kW across the train-set. One of the most remarkable aspects of this technology is its environmental impact; the train operates with zero carbon emissions, expelling only water vapor as a by-product.
This ambitious project involved comprehensive design phases, prototype manufacturing, and the pioneering development of hydrogen traction technology, specifically within the context of Indian Railways. As this hydrogen train-set is in the pilot phase, it is not yet feasible to conduct a direct cost comparison with existing fuel-powered traction systems.

This significant announcement was made by Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, during a recent session in Lok Sabha.
