IndiGo Crisis: Senior Aviation Officials to Perform On-Site Inspections at 10 Major Airports
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has ordered senior officials to conduct on-site inspections at major airports across India to address ongoing operational issues faced by IndiGo airlines. This directive follows significant disruptions that have led to chaos at airports nationwide, prompting the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to reduce IndiGo’s flight schedule by 5%. The situation has escalated to the point where the government is actively monitoring and intervening to ensure passenger safety and service quality.
On-Site Inspections Ordered
In response to the ongoing operational challenges at IndiGo, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has instructed officials at the deputy secretary, director, and joint secretary levels to visit key airports. These inspections are set to take place within the next day and will focus on major hubs such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Guwahati, Goa, and Thiruvananthapuram. These locations have been identified as the most affected by passenger distress and frequent flight cancellations. The ministry aims to gather firsthand accounts of the situation to better understand the challenges passengers are facing and to ensure that necessary improvements are made swiftly.
Flight Schedule Reduction
As part of the response to the operational breakdown, the DGCA has mandated a 5% reduction in IndiGo’s flight schedule. With the airline operating approximately 2,200 flights daily, this reduction translates to about 110 flights being cut each day. Officials are currently determining which specific flights will be affected. This measure is intended to alleviate some of the pressure on the airline’s operations and improve overall service reliability for passengers.
Government’s Ongoing Monitoring
The Ministry of Civil Aviation and the DGCA have been closely monitoring the situation since December 3, treating the disruptions as an extraordinary circumstance. A high-level review meeting was convened, led by Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, to assess the conditions at various airports. Senior officials deployed to these locations are tasked with verifying airline operations and the quality of services provided to passengers. Immediate feedback from travelers is expected to be addressed promptly, ensuring that their concerns are taken seriously.
Parliamentary Discussion and Regulatory Actions
The crisis has also been a topic of discussion in Parliament. During a session in the Rajya Sabha, Minister Kinjarapu clarified that the issues faced by passengers are not linked to the Aircraft Maintenance and Scheduling System (AMSS) but stem from IndiGo’s internal crew rostering and operational planning. He emphasized that safety standards remain a top priority and that stringent Civil Aviation Requirements (CARs) are in place to protect passengers affected by delays and cancellations. In addition, the DGCA has intensified its regulatory scrutiny, issuing show-cause notices to IndiGo’s CEO and COO as part of its oversight efforts.
