WhatsApp to Block AI Tools, ChatGPT to Depart by 2026

WhatsApp is set to implement significant changes to its platform by blocking all non-Meta AI chatbots, including popular services like ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot. This policy shift, confirmed by Meta, will take effect on January 15, 2026, as part of an update to the messaging service’s terms of service. Users and businesses will no longer have access to AI tools not developed by Meta, marking a major transition for the platform.

The upcoming policy change means that well-known AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Copilot will no longer be available on WhatsApp. OpenAI and Microsoft have both announced their plans to withdraw their chatbot integrations ahead of the January deadline. OpenAI indicated its exit earlier this month, followed by Microsoft, which confirmed its compliance with WhatsApp’s revised Business Solution terms. These terms mandate that AI chatbot providers must cease operations on the platform once the new rules come into effect. Users who currently utilize ChatGPT through WhatsApp can still link their accounts before the cutoff date to retain access to their conversation history. However, Microsoft has clarified that Copilot users will not have a means to transfer their chat history once the service is discontinued.

WhatsApp Business API to Remain Limited to Support Services

Meta has outlined the new policy in detail, informing AI developers that the WhatsApp Business API will no longer serve as a distribution channel for independent AI chatbots. The API will still be accessible for businesses that provide customer support or information services, but it will not support cases where the AI chatbot is the primary product. A spokesperson from Meta emphasized that the Business API is designed to assist companies in delivering essential updates and support to their customers. This change aims to ensure that the platform continues to support businesses that have developed communication tools on WhatsApp.

Implications for Future AI Developments

The restrictions imposed by WhatsApp may lead to further exits from the platform by other AI companies, including Perplexity. Once the new policy is in place, Meta’s own AI assistant will be the sole chatbot available within WhatsApp. This shift highlights a significant move by Meta to consolidate its control over AI interactions on its platform, potentially reshaping how businesses and users engage with AI technologies in the future. As the deadline approaches, many AI developers will need to reassess their strategies and consider alternative platforms for their services.
