Challenges in Preservation
As Mumbai continues to evolve, the preservation of its Art Deco heritage faces significant challenges. The city’s real estate market is driven by a desire for modern, utilitarian structures, leading to the demolition of many historic buildings. Over the past decade, Kumar has documented more than 1,500 Art Deco structures, yet only about 70 are currently protected by preservation laws.
