Players Left Stranded as Organizers Abandon Tournament

The Indian Heaven Premier League (IHPL), a T20 cricket tournament aimed at promoting the sport in Jammu and Kashmir, has abruptly collapsed, leaving players and staff in disarray. Organizers reportedly fled Srinagar overnight, abandoning unpaid bills and stranded participants. The tournament, which featured international stars like Chris Gayle and Jesse Ryder, was expected to boost local tourism but instead ended in chaos, with around 40 players left confused and unpaid at their hotels.

Organizers’ Disappearance and Player Struggles

The sudden exit of the IHPL organizers has left many players in a precarious situation. According to English umpire Mellissa Juniper, the organizers vanished without settling their debts to the hotel, players, or officials. She noted that arrangements were made with the hotel to allow players to return home, as keeping them away from their families was deemed unfair. The Residency Hotel, where many participants were accommodated, revealed that the Yuva Society had reserved approximately 150 rooms just ten days prior. However, by Sunday morning, the organizers had disappeared, leaving behind a trail of confusion and unpaid dues. Some players, including Chris Gayle, had already checked out a day earlier, exacerbating the situation.

Local Reactions and Financial Mismanagement

Former Indian all-rounder Parvez Rasool, who participated in the league, described how some players were initially prevented from leaving the hotel until foreign embassies intervened. An English umpire had to contact the British embassy to assist stranded players. Local players expressed disappointment, suggesting that the organizers miscalculated the event’s scale and costs. They noted that the lack of proper uniforms and contracts indicated poor planning. The first day of the tournament saw no uniforms provided, and players had to source them locally. The absence of signed contracts raised concerns about the legitimacy of the event.

Government Involvement and Promises of Growth

Despite the chaos, a J&K Sports Council official stated that the IHPL president, Ashu Dani, had secured police clearance and infrastructure support for the league. They confirmed that the government had no role in the event’s organization, leaving many puzzled about its abrupt collapse. A government press release from October 22 suggested official involvement in preparations, with Divisional Commissioner Anshul Garg predicting a turnout of 25,000 to 30,000 spectators at Bakshi Stadium. The league, which aimed to promote grassroots cricket and youth empowerment, was initially announced on September 18 and was set to run from October 23 to November 7.

Event Highlights and Attendance Issues

The IHPL featured a lineup of 32 former international players, with Chris Gayle’s matches being the only ones to attract significant crowds. Other notable players included Thisara Perera, who participated in just one game, and Richard Levi from South Africa. The league promised to showcase eight teams composed of local, national, and international players. However, from the outset, attendance was disappointing, even after ticket prices were reduced. Allegations surfaced that sponsors withdrew their support at the last minute, leading to the event’s untimely demise. As the sun set over Srinagar, the dream of a successful cricket tournament faded, leaving behind a stark reminder of the challenges faced in organizing such events in the region.
