Coco Robotics Appoints UCLA Professor to Head New Physical AI Research Lab

Coco Robotics, a startup specializing in last-mile delivery bots, is taking a significant step forward by establishing a physical AI lab in collaboration with UCLA professor Bolei Zhou, who will serve as the chief AI scientist. This initiative aims to leverage five years’ worth of data collected by the company’s robots to enhance automation and efficiency in their delivery operations. With a focus on utilizing advanced AI technologies, Coco Robotics is poised to transform its services and reduce delivery costs.

Strategic Move to Enhance Automation

Founded in 2020, Coco Robotics initially relied on teleoperators to assist its delivery bots in navigating complex urban environments. However, the company’s vision has always been to achieve full autonomy for its robots, thereby lowering delivery costs. Co-founder and CEO Zach Rash emphasized that the startup has now amassed millions of miles of data from intricate urban settings, which is crucial for training reliable AI systems. “We’re now at the point where we have sufficient data scale to accelerate a lot of the research happening around physical AI,” Rash stated. This shift towards automation marks a pivotal moment for the company as it seeks to refine its technology and improve service delivery.

Collaboration with Leading Researchers

The decision to appoint Bolei Zhou as the head of the new AI lab was described by Rash as a “no brainer.” Zhou is recognized globally for his expertise in robot navigation and reinforcement learning, particularly in the realm of micromobility. Coco Robotics has previously collaborated with Zhou, as both Rash and co-founder Brad Squicciarini are alumni of UCLA and have contributed to the university’s research efforts by donating one of their delivery bots. Rash noted that Zhou’s ability to attract top-tier researchers to the lab will significantly enhance the company’s research capabilities and expedite advancements in their technology.

Data Utilization and Research Goals

The newly established research lab will operate independently from Coco Robotics’ collaboration with OpenAI, which allows the startup to utilize OpenAI’s models while providing access to its robot-collected data. Currently, Coco Robotics intends to use the insights gained from the lab to improve its own operations rather than selling the data to competitors. Rash indicated that the primary focus will be on enhancing the local models that the robots rely on for navigation and efficiency. Additionally, the company plans to share relevant research findings with the cities in which it operates, aiming to address infrastructure challenges that impede their delivery bots.

Rash articulated a clear vision for the lab’s success, emphasizing the goal of delivering high-quality services at competitive prices. “How do we get our costs lower? How do we make this much more affordable for businesses and customers?” he asked. By focusing on these objectives, Coco Robotics aims to foster substantial growth within the delivery ecosystem. The integration of advanced AI research and the strategic use of collected data are expected to play a critical role in achieving these ambitious goals, ultimately benefiting both the company and its customers.
