Airbound Secures $8.65M to Develop Rocket-Style Drones for One-Cent Deliveries in India

Airbound, an innovative drone startup based in India, has successfully secured $8.65 million in seed funding, spearheaded by Lachy Groom, co-founder of Physical Intelligence. This funding comes as the company embarks on a drone delivery pilot program with a private hospital, aiming to revolutionize logistics with its ultra-light, blended-wing-body aircraft designed for one-cent deliveries. The investment round also saw participation from Humba Ventures and existing investor Lightspeed Venture Partners, alongside contributions from senior leaders at Tesla, SpaceX, and Anduril.

Innovative Drone Design and Cost Efficiency

Founded in 2020 by Naman Pushp, who began his journey at just 15 years old, Airbound has developed a unique aircraft featuring a tail-sitter design. This allows the drone to launch vertically like a rocket while utilizing a carbon fiber frame to enhance performance. The startup’s goal is to deliver parcels at a fraction of the cost of traditional delivery methods, aiming for prices up to 20 times lower than current systems. The aircraft’s blended-wing-body shape, equipped with two propellers, offers a significant advantage over conventional quadcopters, enabling it to take off and fly more efficiently.

Pushp explained that the company is targeting one-cent deliveries by optimizing energy use in logistics. Currently, electric two-wheelers dominate the delivery landscape in India, but they are inefficient due to their weight and energy costs. Airbound’s TRT drone, designed for small payloads, eliminates the need for a human driver, drastically reducing transport weight and energy consumption. This innovative approach could lead to a 20-fold decrease in energy costs per kilometer, making ultra-low-cost drone delivery a realistic possibility.

Future Developments and Production Goals

The first version of Airbound’s drone weighs approximately 3.3 pounds and can carry a payload of up to 2.2 pounds. The company is also working on a second version that will support a payload of 6.6 pounds while weighing only 2.6 pounds. A prototype of this advanced model is expected to be ready for testing by mid-2024, with full production slated for early 2027. Pushp emphasized that the future of logistics lies in efficiency and weight management, asserting that a lighter and more efficient drone will dominate the market.

Airbound’s aircraft utilizes lithium-ion batteries, which offer a longer cycle life compared to the commonly used lithium-polymer batteries. This choice is crucial, as battery replacement costs represent a significant portion of operational expenses. Currently, the production cost of each drone stands at $2,000, with delivery costs around ₹24 (approximately $0.27). The startup aims to reduce delivery costs to below ₹5 (about $0.05) by the end of 2026, with a target of achieving one million deliveries per day by mid-2027. To meet this ambitious goal, Airbound plans to ramp up its manufacturing capacity from one drone per day to over 100.

Pilot Program and Market Expansion Plans

Airbound has initiated its first pilot program in collaboration with Bengaluru’s Narayana Health, focusing on the delivery of medical logistics. This three-month pilot aims to complete ten deliveries daily, transporting medical tests, blood samples, and other essential supplies. Beyond healthcare, Airbound is also exploring opportunities in quick commerce, food delivery, and various last-mile delivery sectors.

Looking ahead, the startup has plans to expand beyond India once it achieves its delivery goals. Airbound is eyeing entry into the U.S. market within three years. The company is actively engaging with regulators, including India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation, to expedite the launch of its drone flights. With over $10 million raised in total funding and a dedicated team of 50, Airbound is poised to scale its operations and enhance its service offerings, paving the way for broader market adoption by 2026.
